Did you watch "American Idol" last night? I sat there and watched as guy after guy stood up, sang a boring song and walked away.
Normally, I'd go singer by singer and make comments on what I thought, but, off the top of your head, can you really remember one of the performances without thinking of a name or face?
I can remember that horrible version of Elvis Presley, a weak version of The Doors and a guy being called "Jacuzzi."
In the past, you'd watch and think, "They could easily win." This year, not so much.
Here's a quick list of some of the big names releasing albums today:
B.B. King Live
Mike Doughty Golden Delicious
The Raveonettes Lust Lust Lust
The White Stripes Conquista
Last night, the CD Release Party for the Homebrew CD was held at The Evening Muse. We handed out 125 CDs for free and watched a seven featured artists perform along with the regular open mic folks.
It was a great night for local music — so many people showed up they removed the tables from the Muse to make more room.
If you didn't make it, we'll try to have more CDs hitting the streets this week. They'll be at Manifest Discs and Lunchbox Records.
We'll also be passing some out at upcoming shows - more info as it becomes available. They go fast, so keep an eye out for them!
The KimNiption Benefit will be at Amos' on Sunday at 5 p.m. - get out and show your support and love for one of Charlotte's great guitarists!
The Homebrew CD Release Party is on Monday at 7 p.m. at The Evening Muse. We'll hand out CDs to the first 100 or so people to show up. Cover is just a few bucks for the fine people putting it all together.
See you there!
The Rowdy Frynds Tour, with Lynyrd Skynyrd and Hank Williams Jr., will stop by Charlotte Bobcats Arena on May 31.
Tickets go on sale on Feb. 23 at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster and the arena box office.
Karaoke Idol, I mean, American Idol, named the finalists to the top 24 last night.
All seemed well and good - except for the surprise of not picking Josiah "the kid who sleeps in his car" Leming - and then you find something like this over at votefortheworst.com.
So, it looks like most of the contestants already have had some taste of fame, or a record contract.
I'm pretty sure this show has already jumped the shark...
Kanye West, Rihanna, NERD and Lupe Fiasco will perform at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre on May 8 - yep, the day before Radiohead.
It's a pretty uneventful week on the national release scene. Widespread Panic releases Free Somehow, but that's about it.
Fair to Midland and Serj Tankian rocked Amos' last night. Review coming in the Feb. 20 edition of Creative Loafing. (Tankian setlist after the jump.)
Radiohead will be performing at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre on May 9, 2008.
Pre-sale tickets will go on sale Feb. 14. General tickets go on sale on Feb. 16 at livenation.com, ticketmaster and at the box office at Verizon Wireless.
