Today's Menu (9/26/2008)

Posted By on Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 7:17 AM

Iced Earth Classically tinged metal, where Iron Maiden meets orchestral dirges that in turn spew power metal with soaring vocals and guitars. They are metal legends in their own right, though, with over two decades of recording and touring. Last year's Framing Armageddon is a concept album, which at first listen seems pretentious but the music gets in your skin with anthemic blasters and operatic vocals. Also on the bill: Saviours and Into Eternity. Amos' Southend (Samir Shukla)

Ed McMahon turns rapper?

Posted By on Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 3:50 PM

Another sign that times are hard.

According to CNN, Ed McMahon will star in two viral rap videos for FreeCreditReport.com, a financial Web site owned by credit bureau Experian.

What we can look forward to:

"When I retired, I was famous," McMahon raps in the video. "I had money and glory/I bought a house for 6 mill/I thought nothing could touch me/Until my credit went south, and debt started to crunch me/Next thing I know, instead of playing gin rummy, I was scrambling just to make ends meet/It wasn't funny."

After being joined by two scantily clad women, McMahon continues: "Got a bump from the media chumps, but that was temporary/Wife with bad credit was scary, so I got wise/I may have fallen, but I got back up/Now I'm back on the attack, like a ninja swinging nunchucks/I told the haters, 'Go on, take a hike'/It's my show now, and I can do what I like.

The big question on everybody's mind: Will he outdo Soulja Boy?

Today's Menu (9/24/2008)

Posted By on Wed, Sep 24, 2008 at 11:17 AM

O.A.R. Long running Maryland jammers O.A.R. (Of A Revolution) are hitting the pavement, plugging their newest recording All Sides. Jam bands like to hit the stage and plow into long interplay. O.A.R. are no slackers in that endeavor while adding distance to other jammers via their innate musicality of tightly woven pop and rock numbers. The moody aura of the short ditties is as effective as the improv-laden eclectic jams. Matt Wertz will open. Cricket Arena (Samir Shukla)

The Lights, Fluorescent Led by the give-and-take of Erika Blatnik and Robby Hartis, The Lights, Fluorescent certainly have co-opted a bit of that sunny day-style real estate, and to fine effect: think layered, hook-heavy, flourish-friendly alt.rock, all tied up with a cooed, co-ed twist. Check out their excellent EP, Neoteny, available at shows or online, for a free tour. With Rahim. Milestone (Timothy C. Davis)

Flogging Molly with Beat Union and The Loved Ones

Amos’ Southend

Sept. 21, 2008

tmpphplzi5wy.jpg

The Deal: The septet of Celtic-punk rockers known as Flogging Molly caused an energy-filled ruckus during its powerful performance at Amos’ Southend. Along with them was Birmingham, England-based power-pop punk rockers Beat Union and Philadelphia-based punk group The Loved Ones.

Music Menu (9/19-9/21/2008)

Posted By on Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 3:48 PM

FRIDAY, SEPT. 19

Eilen Jewell Call it mood country, where the mood is a cross between Chris Isaac and Loretta Lynn. Jewell paints vivid images of lost American highways with her sad voice and music, which is just the right weave of timeless country, blues and a hint of jazz. A drive through a desert highway in the still of the night is the vibe here. She croons her tales while the Boston-based singer's scrap band colors the words. Evening Muse (Samir Shukla)

Sunny Ledfurd I used to give these guys (now "this guy" – Dugi Bakalli) all kinds of shit due to their rather knuckleheaded take on NuMetal. Since the full band days, Bakalli has taken his sound all Kenny Chesney-meets-Jack Johnson-at-Lake Norman-with-tequila-in-tow, to, if not delightful effect, effective effect. It ain't Proust ("I'm the Myrtle Beach midnight mayor/gonna shag on the Strand like a player/we get hurricanes fuck a tornader"), but it's good enough for fancy-free floating around on a pontoon boat, rebel flag raft at the ready. (Mind you, if you're into such "good times.") With Ziggy Pockets and Piedmont Boys. Amos' Southend (Timothy C. Davis)

SATURDAY, SEPT. 20

Jamie McLean Band Guitar slinger McLean has put in six-string duty with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and lent his studio chops to everyone from Norah Jones to Chuck D. McLean's classic riffs and southern rock tips the hat to the Faces and The Black Crowes while instilling his signature into all facets of blues rock. McLean and his band are on the road plugging the freshly released album, American Heartache. Double Door Inn (Shukla)

SUNDAY, SEPT. 21

Randy Burke Best-known for fronting locals the Naked Ramblers in the mid-80s, Burke's crew took the college rock format and stood it on its head, channeling more Beefheart than Bad Brains into the mix. The band was never afraid to poke fun at the pretensions of rock, and as a solo artist that's part of Burke's raison d'etre as has been stated succinctly elsewhere, "a singer-songwriter that 'interacts' with the audience while singing songs of odd men's deeds." You'll have to imagine the rest, or better yet, find out for yourself. Opening for Throw Me the Statue, LA Tool and Die, and Bloody Organs. Milestone (John Schacht)

Holy Liars This Athens, Ga. quartet plies the dirt roads with fuzzed-out garage rock and battered guitars slung low, riffed-up to the max. Consider Holy Liars' down and dirty, grungy Americana as the southern rock of this young century. Their recent release Smoke is an apt moniker. Also on the bill are Sleepy Horses and Transmission Fields. Snug Harbor (Shukla)

Benefit For Charles Hairston If you read this week's cover story, you know the background. Local frontman for The Monday Night All-Stars Hairston, 61, is fighting a battle with cancer and has mounting medical bills. If you've been to the Double Door on a Monday night in the last 13 years, chances are you've seen him sing, dance and impress the hell out of the crowd. The Double Door Inn (Jeff Hahne)

No, it ain't a drag...

Posted By on Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 4:22 PM

RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN — that’s the sound you’ll hear at the drag race — at like, 10 million decibels. The volume is so high you can not only hear it, but feel it. The noise revving from the engine literally rattles your body when you’re standing, and vibrates your butt when seated on the bleachers. And it can be heard up to 20 miles away. It’s kinda like an extreme sport where everyone gets to feel a bit of the rush.

drag108.jpg

Last weekend, I bypassed the Panther’s game where De-Homme beat Da-Bears and went to the drag. (Our boys are looking good this year, are they not?)

It runs from 6 to 10 p.m. in the Dixie's parking lot. It's free!

Robert Smith is mad

Posted By on Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 5:59 PM

Robert Smith of The Cure is pissed off at his record label and iTunes UK. He isn't being quiet about it either. Read more about why he is angry at Rolling Stone.

R.I.P., TRL!

Posted By on Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 3:22 PM

It was announced today that MTV's TRL will be leaving the air after 10 years.

Good riddance! The network that has all but abandoned music on television is getting rid of one of their only music shows, but also one of the worst out there.

That's what I like — watching screaming teenagers idolize talentless hacks. I'd probably be disappointed if the show ever had good music on it. In this case, it's just another way to get all the garbage off of mainstream media.

See ya, TRL! I won't miss you a bit!
