Flagship Brigade with Cannon Hill and Jimmy Brown

Visulite Theatre

Oct. 19, 2008

Pics coming soon!

The Deal: The flyer for the show said, “If you love music like The Beatles, Radiohead, Sonic Youth, Sigur Ros then you must come to this concert. Flagship Brigade/ Cannon Hill/ Jimmy Brown.” It all went down on Oct. 19 at Visulite Theatre.

The Good: To start off the show Belfast-native Jimmy Brown performed an acoustic set. Brown played his music gem “Under The Sun,” along with others like “Yo Yo Heart,” “Muzzle the Muse” and more, including a newbie called “3 Feet From Gold.” His performance was well-done, proving that he doesn’t need a lot of instruments to capture the beauty of his music’s sound. Indie pop-rockers, Cannon Hill performed next. The four-piece band began with a song called “See The Blue Sky,” and went on to play more, each displaying tight skills and enthusiastic dance rock. The music made you want to move and front man Nicolas Balachandran did his share, even jumping out into the crowd. The indie experimental rockers Flagship Brigade performed last and took the crowd away with a moving batch of soundscapes. Songs like “Staring At The Sun” featured dreamy vibes amidst a catchy chorus line. The extra spices were added by the band’s spacey rock sounds and additional shouts. Highlights of the performance included the bands newest track “All To Love,” “Cautious Eyes” and possibly a future indie rock hit called “Sons & Daughters.” The band had the sound of Icelandic experimental music pioneers Sigur Ros, but vocal wise I couldn’t stop thinking that front man Drake Margolnick’s voice resembled music legend Robert Smith’s (The Cure).

The Bad: The show was on a Sunday night, which meant a tired Monday morning was just around the corner. Nevertheless, it was the perfect ending to the weekend.

The Verdict: Each act put on an impressive set. These bands might just be some local acts that go big sooner or later. Look for upcoming shows in the area and check them out on myspace below.
