Making TRACES at Spirit Square

A different kind of circus has come to town... As in TRACES, which is now showing at Blumenthal’s McGlohon Theatre at Spirit Square. Think Cirque du Soleil meets Stomp meets Rent.

I actually went to see TRACES with a girl who’s been to Cirque du Soleil in Vegas and claims that TRACES was in fact better due to the real life applications of the performances. The cast consists of some of the most athletic and acrobatic actors in theater. At one point, I wondered if the actors even had bones. I thought I was flexible because I can do the splits, but these actors were tumbling, twisting, leaping, climbing, spinning and extending their bodies in ways I didn’t know a human body could move. And they did so using basketballs, skateboards, pianos, chairs, rings... and a catapult.

They did a parody of a Big-Brother-type game show and when a roommate was ejected, they were literally thrown into the air via a catapult for which they did more flips than an Olympic diver.

During the pole performance, I screamed thinking an actor was going to slam his head on the stage when he slid down a pole extended to the top of the stage (and those who’ve been to McGlohon Theatre know that it’s a rather tall stage). Another guy did what looked like a dolphin jump through a small ring piled four high, landing on the back of his neck. I sat through the entire 90-minute show with my jaw dropped.

At one point a little boy behind me screamed, “That is not safe!” That’s right kids, don’t try this at home. But this show is definitely worth leaving home to see.

TRACES will be here through Nov. 16

Showing Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Friday & Saturday at 8 p.m. and Saturday & Sunday at 2 p.m.

(No performances Oct. 23 or Nov. 9)

You can find me in tha club….

Club Blume that is. Club Blume is the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center’s special pre-show “informances.” It’s a social club for young adults who want an artistic nightlife. It’s free to join and a membership equates to an all access pass to the arts – with a discount! There will be another Club Blume “informance” with the cast of TRACES on Nov. 6. I want to go so I can ask them if they have bones.
