With the high vendor prices at Charlotte music venues stirring debate this week see Lynn Farris post from earlier this week or Sarah Aarthuns rant here it was refreshing to walk into a show last night and see things the way theyre supposed to be.
First, by now most of us are aware of the $11 beers that angered so many at the new Uptown Amphitheatres debut on Saturday evening. If youve made the trek north to the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre this season, youve seen the same thing. Inflated prices on food and band merchandise as well.
Enter an old staple, NoDas own Neighborhood Theatre. Last night, on the verge of releasing its third album, indie darlings Band of Horses was in town to debut some of its new stuff in front of a keenly attentive, sold-out crowd. The show was great, but there were a few other elements in play that really made for an enjoyable concert for us fans.
Medeski, Martin & Wood will perform at the Neighborhood Theatre on Sept. 19. Tickets go on sale on June 19.

We wrapped up our trip in China's capital city, Beijing. Beijing is just as international as
Shanghai, but has a much longer cultural history. The Forbidden City is there as is the
Temple of Heaven and sections of the Great Wall.
After checking out Beijing's rock scene, I wanted to see some live jazz. As it happens,
Beijing was having it's yearly "Nine Gates Festival" which is named after the nine gates
of the Forbidden City. The festival had events in the Forbidden City itself and in jazz
clubs around the city. I caught the Canadian Yannick Rieu Quartet which played for
two nights at the East Shore Jazz Cafe. The cafe sits on Hou Hai, a fabulous outdoor
lake area that sits behind the Forbidden City. Indeed, the club has a terrace that
you can go up on in between sets for fresh and a great view of the lake.
Two significant shows heading to town and what does our beloved music editor decide to do? He skips out on us to go and cover Bonnaroo. But rest assured, we managed to get things covered.
First up Janes Addiction and Nine Inch Nails (aka NIN|JA 2009 Tour) at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre. Its significance the influential-yet-short-lived Janes Addiction have regrouped (original line-up, in fact) and are hinting at the possibilities of a new record while Trent Reznor (aka Nine Inch Nails) says farewell to music fans indefinitely.
Opening the show was Street Sweeper Social Club, the latest project from guitarist Tom Morello (ex-Rage Against the Machine). In a radio interview prior to the concert, Morello declared this latest offering to be the closest thing to Rage hes been involved with since that band split. Nuff said for this Rage fan. And after watching an explosive 30-minute set that was indeed heavy on the Rage funk-metal vibe, I think I would agree. Many thanks goes to singer Boots Riley too for softly stepping on his soapbox meaning he says just enough to get the point across but is quick to get back to the music.
