Live Grammy commentary

Posted By on Sun, Jan 31, 2010 at 5:10 PM

Stay tuned right here — I'll be offering up my commentary on tonight's Grammy Awards during the broadcast (live from my couch). Expect complaints, humor, winners and whatever else is running through my mind while the broadcast goes on...

Just flipped past the Grammy previews on TV Guide channel. Glad to see my predictions are doing so well — Levon Helm won for Best Americana Album, Ziggy Marley won Best Children's Album, Buckwheat Zydeco, Stephen Marley, Los Tigres del Norte and I even picked the Best Surround Sound Album right...

Mr. "Pants on the Ground" is at the Grammys — ok, it was a catchy song, but he's at 14:59 in his 15 minutes of fame.

The live coverage brings now...

The Grammy's are scheduled to run until 11:30 - any early wagers on whether it will end on time or not?

Really? Starting off the show with Lady Gaga? Surprised by that one... Interesting outfit, not surprised her ass is hanging out. She kinda looks like Marilyn Manson in drag. Duet with Elton John...both in soot-covered makeup/outfits. Lady Gaga singing at the piano, without the ridiculous outfits and horrible pop music would probably have more widespread success. This style of song has a lot more longevity than the typical radio crap you hear from her... Then again, that's part of the reason they call it pop.

If you don't know who Jeff Beck is, do a google search - NOW!

Stephen Colbert's monologue not too bad... jokes on Susan Boyle, Black Eyed Peas, Jonas Brothers, Adam Lambert. Seen in the crowd - Nicole Kidman needs to settle down on the plastic surgery.

Song of the Year goes to... Beyonce. That was my guess, so I can't say I'm surprised. She's not there to accept because she's getting ready to perform. Really? What's more important?

Green Day performing "21 Guns" with cast of "American Idiot." Sounds like Broadway... I like the band's version better. It just had a little bit of a campy cheese factor — I'm sure fans of Glee loved it.

I wonder if there are people who go to nursing and retirement homes, sit and stare and the little old ladies and say, "I'm watching the Grammys."

Best Country Album goes to... Taylor Swift. Did you have any doubt?

Beyonce is performing. Stop screaming, please. "If I were a Boy" — not bad when it's toned down, but that beginning was overwhelming. Now she's singing a cover of Alanis Morisette's "You Oughta Know." I guess she's trying to show off a rock side of Sasha Fierce?

Pink showcasing her vocals... I'm guessing she'll break out into her acrobatics. Yep — Very cool performance. Let's see Britney Spears do all that — while actually singing.

Best New Artist winner is... Zac Brown Band. I'm batting 1.000 on my predictions so far tonight.

Black Eyed Peas performing "Imma Be." Interesting performance. Not sure what's up with Will.i.am's mask. It's a bit repetitive. They're good performers in general. They're switching to "I Gotta Feeling." Dancing speakers - interesting. You have to admit it's as catchy as it is overplayed.

Lady Antebellum performance. Kinda sounds Fleetwood Mac-esque. Good vocals — I'm not too familiar with their music. It's not bad — the slide guitar gives it more of a country feel.

Best Comedy Album goes to... Stephen Colbert.

Got sidetracked by the news that JEM will stay with the Neighborhood Theatre.

Bobby Darin wins Lifetime Achievement Award.

Record of the Year goes to... Kings of Leon! Nice! Glad to see them recognized.

Jamie Foxx performing with a bit of auto-tune. Who did he pay to get on this show? George Clinton's loving it, but this song sucks. Ugh... T-Pain out there, too. I didn't think it would get any worse. Slash kicked it up a bit, but he sounded out of tune. Worst performance I've seen in a while on the Grammys.

Ke$ha looks like a man and Justin Beiber looks like he could fit in someone's pocket.

Katy Perry and Alice Cooper — interesting pair — presenting Best Rock Album, which goes to... Green Day.

Zac Brown Band performing with Leon Russell. Starting off with "America the Beautiful" — soulful rendition. Russell looks a bit like father time — good performance. Zac Brown Band's got some great harmonies going. Damn, Zac Brown can play some guitar, too!

We're at the halfway point.

Taylor Swift performance. Ok. She's good...she has crossover appeal with her hint of pop style, but her lyrics are very young. She doesn't have the most powerful vocals... So, I don't believe the hype yet. She's also singing offkey for "Rihannon" which isn't sounding very good. Now they're singing one of Taylor's songs... "You Belong With Me." Her harmonies with Stevie Nicks are off.

Lionel Richie introducing a Michael Jackson tribute. Apparently, you're supposed to have 3-D glasses... not sure what's up with that. I don't have any, so this video looks terrible. Celine Dion, Usher, Carrie Underwood... I just wish they'd stop showing the 3-D video. Jennifer Hudson out there now — I hope she tones down her screaming. Smokey Robinson now out on stage. It looks like visual vomit.

Jackson's kids are there to accept the award — there's just something awkward about it. Yep, I said it.

Bon Jovi performing "We Weren't Born to Follow" and "Who Says You Can't Go Home" (with Jennifer Nettles.) Nettles has a great voice. Now they're playing "Living on a Prayer."

Mos Def and Placido Domingo - another interesting pairing. Best Rap Collaboration goes to... would be hilarious if it's Lonely Island and T-Pain, but it's... "Run This Town."

Mary J. Blige and Andrea Bocelli "Like a Bridge over Troubled Water." I'm liking the emotion that's coming out — the song is dedicated to Haiti.

Dave Matthews Band performing "You and Me." Some orchestra members (strings) rolled in... Dave in a tie/vest - don't see that often. More orchestra in... horns this time. Definitely a performance that celebrates music.

Best Female Vocal Performance goes to... Beyonce. I figured it would be between Taylor Swift and her... but I picked Swift. Whoops.

Maxwell performance. He's got range in his vocals, but not a huge fan of this style of music. Too much trilling in the vocal. Roberta Flack out there now. Not a bad duet.

Montage of all those that have died. I'm sure MJ will be last. Koko Taylor... Dan Seals... Teddy Pendergrass... DJ AM... Jay Bennett... Vic Chesnutt... Les Paul... (didn't see Jay Reatard on there or MJ.)

Jeff Beck paying tribute to Les Paul. Not sure who that is singing with him (Imelda May?), but it was well done — amazing that Beck doesn't use a guitar pick.

Quentin Tarrantino looks like a goofball — sunglasses and black shirt. Kinda looks like Elvis.

Eminem, Lil Wayne, Drake and Travis Barker on the drums performing... Barker can hammer the shit out of a drumkit. Half of the song so far has been bleeped out. Sounds like my TV is broken.

Final award of the night is Album of the Year... the winner is Taylor Swift.
