An academic look at Illmatic

Posted By on Wed, Mar 17, 2010 at 12:27 PM

There's no obvious parallel between a university whose tuition and fees neared $39 g's this year and a hip-hop album that was only 39 minutes, but Duke University got together professors Mark Anthony Neal and James Peterson, along with Grammy-award winning producer, 9th Wonder (who's also a professor), for a lecture called "Sampling Soul," to look at Nas' 1994 debut album, Illmatic.

The university streamed the class live on UStream last night and while many of the students seemed to be off in their own worlds during the 87-minute session, a captive online audience watched and chimed in on the classic album and it's impact on the hip-hop landscape at the time.

You can watch the whole lecture above. I still hate Duke's basketball team but I can respect an academic discussion of hip-hop.
