10-in-10 CD reviews (3/26/2010)

Posted By on Fri, Mar 26, 2010 at 11:33 AM

Each Friday, we bring you 10 CD reviews done in 10 words each:

Coco Montoya I Want it All Back — Guitarist creates what could be equivalent of easy listening blues.

Mose Allison The Way of the World — 12-year hiatus ends with playful, easy-going new album.

Sonya Kitchell Convict of Conviction EP — Singer’s style and vocals have tone beyond their 21 years.

Social Code Rock N Roll — Energetic rock debut in vein of Buckcherry from Edmonton quartet.

Fireball Ministry Fireball Ministry — Sounds like pop and metal married, had an ugly baby.

Walter Jr. Standing on the Word — Album features guitar-driven gospel songs with heavy religious songs.

Bettie Serveert Pharmacy of Love — Band continues down path of straight-ahead rock ‘n’ roll.

Swollen Members Greatest Hits — I’m sure their fan is truly thrilled about this album.

The Ruse Love Sex Confusion — I hear similarities to U2 in their radio-friendly rock.

Scorpions Sting in the Tail — Klaus and the fellas release final album before final tour.

An Horse in concert (03/25/2010)

Posted By on Thu, Mar 25, 2010 at 2:26 PM

An Horse Aussie duo An Horse, Kate Cooper (vocals, guitar) and Damon Cox (drums), write pared down tunes, stitched with raggedy guitar strumming, about life's travails, all with a perky, "hey that sounds good" hook. The no nonsense songcraft has an immediacy of sing-along lyrics to it. RIYL: The Breeders and female fronted alt-rock from the '90s. With The Lights Fluorescent and Van Edward. Neighborhood Theatre

Why care about Bonnaroo?

Posted By on Thu, Mar 25, 2010 at 11:58 AM

Someone commented on a blog post of mine asking why he should care about festivals in other cities and why I don't focus just on the city of Charlotte and the music here... Why should the average reader care about my coverage of Bonnaroo or the Voodoo Festival, etc.

My answer — probably for the same reason that I go, to see or hear about bands that I'm not familiar with who are likely to come to Charlotte in the future.

This summer, I'll once again head back to the farmlands of Manchester, Tenn., to check out Bonnaroo 2010 and hope to find and hear bands that I haven't heard before and that I will recommend checking out.

Here's a quick look back at what I learned in previous years —

I get it, I'm late

Posted By on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 2:41 PM

Whether it was never listening to an entire album from The Beatles until college or picking up a hip-hop album just one week after it was released and trying to talk about how good I thought it was, in my position, no one lets me slide on being late.

Few things are as cutting and condescending as getting a "you're late" reply to something you praise that didn't just hit the streets ... but realistically, aren't we all late to some degree?

Unless you're the DJ who played someone's track for the first time, someone who ran with an up-and-coming artist, chances are you were the person throwing their mixtape or flyer on the ground after they tried to sell it to you in the parking lot of a show or a Walmart somewhere.

Festival season will soon be here

Posted By on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 11:54 AM

Thankfully, spring is here and music festival season is rolling around…

There are regional festivals like Groverfest (in Davidson NC), Groove in the Holler (Prospect Hill), The Getdown Festival (Prospect Hill), and Smilefest (Pinnacle) are revving up as are the larger festivals that attract national acts — Bear Creek (Live Oak FL), Bonnaroo (Manchester TN), and the like.

It goes without saying that music festivals are fabulous since they give people the chance to catch many bands in one setting, to get outdoors, and to experience music with one another. They also give bands the chance to play in front of scores of music lovers.

Dead men tell no tales... except for Tupac, Jimi and MJ

Posted By on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 11:50 AM

Last fall, when Michael Jackson moonwalked to the great beyond, people far and wide immediately said Michael may be gone, but his music would live on forever. Little did they know just how true those words will turn out to be.

Just this week, it was announced that Michael’s estate (read: Mama and Papa Jackson) had reached an agreement to publish previously un-released music. And I know what you’re thinking – “I’m sure MJ’s got a few tracks lying around the studio. They’ll put together and album and it’ll be a nice tribute.” Not quite. This is more than just a few odd-and-end singles. Allegedly there is enough for at LEAST 10 albums. That’s not counting tributes, re-releases, box-sets, remixes, anniversary celebrations, and so-on.

Ladies and gentlemen, meet the Tupac of this decade!

B*tch, in concert (03/24/2010)

Posted By on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 8:43 AM

B*tch Not quite sure how to categorize her music, but I'd say it could be called pop music with an attitude. She's described as a singer/songwriter/electric-violinist/poet/rocker and is currently on tour in support of her second album, Blasted! Her violin playing at times comes across more like Hendrix than anything classical. Like I said, attitude. The Evening Muse

Mixtape Review: Asher Roth's Seared Foie Gras with Quince and Cranberry

Posted By on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 3:36 PM

asherfront

The Deal: Keg and blunt rap star drops first mixtape since debut album after weathering gay rumors and the usual online criticism.

The Good: Came out of the gates with "Muddy Swim Trunks" over a Madlib beat, managing to address and cleverly dispel the rumors of him being gay and also dropped 2 or 3 topical quotables in the process. Really enjoyed him flipping Talib Kweli's "Hot Thing" into "Hot Wings." The CA/PA collabo "Hellafaded" with Pac Div over Beanie Sigel's "Gotta Have It" is my early favorite but the remix of Sour Patch Kids off his debut with Talib Kweli and Blu are up there. "Fuck The Money" was on B.o.B's recent mixtape, nonetheless, it was heat as well.

A salivatingly dope list of producers. Sure, they're all other people's songs, and many of them aren't new but still, 9th Wonder, Kanye West, Jake One, Just Blaze, Pharrell and multiple J Dilla beats? That's a win.

The Bad: There's definitely some throwaway rhymes on this tape but not enough to stamp this one whack. Some listeners will get pissy it's mixed for continuous play/cassette style so you'll hear songs blend, scratch and crossover before the track itself changes.

The Verdict: Like it, don't love it. Asher Roth's fan/foe dynamic is crazy. There's either people who always check for him or people who completely ignore him, very little middle ground. This mixtape won't change that but for those of who like his flow, it's some carrot and celery sticks before the platter of his next record.
