OK Go, Earl Greyhound, Robert Francis
Visulite Theatre
May 12, 2010
The Deal: Viral video band brings that energy to big crowd at the Visulite.
The Good: A quick set by Robert Francis opened the night before the thunderous rock of Earl Greyhound hit the stage. I'm not saying thunderous in a loud way, but mostly because of the massive bass drum in front of the stage.
The band's set is infused with a '70s rock vibe that truly got the crowd warmed up before the headliner. The sound was a bit muddier than what you'd hear on the album attribute that to the "live" sound more than any sound issues with speakers, etc. They've got a fantastic raw quality about them.
They might be known for their music videos, but OK Go brings a great amount of creativity to their live show, as well. The band shot a cannon of confetti off numerous times during the show, threw mini-tambourines to the crowd and had lasers coming off of their guitars for the encore. It's a visual adventure as much as it is an audio one in the vein of The Flaming Lips.
They brought in a bit of the secular for a handbell rendition of "What To Do." Cameras were set up on the microphone stands to offer a close up look at the instruments and faces.
Lead singer Damian Kulash offered plenty of entertaining banter between songs and even made his way out into the crowd, standing on one of the counters for "Last Leaf."
The band also made use of odd instruments and noise makers during various songs.
The Bad: I'm not saying Francis was bad, but I'll say he lacked a memorable quality for me. I couldn't tell you a song he played or much about his music other than it was kinda folk-rock and pretty sleepy.
Definitely a little bit distracting with all the camera flashes going off and the under-21 crowd watching the majority of the concert via their cameras and video recorders. Doesn't anyone go to watch a show anymore instead of just going to video the entire performance?
The Verdict: A lot more fun than I expected it to be. While the show was incredibly entertaining, the songs were also good enough to keep your attention while the confetti wasn't blasting.
