Jack Johnson w/ G. Love, ALO
Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre
Aug. 22, 2010
The Deal: Surf-folk-er Jack Johnson brings his laid back style and some friends to create perfect summer vibe.
The Good: The show got started early with ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra) and its Phish meets Jack's Mannequin vibe. I expected something a bit more jammy, but was pleasantly surprised by the band's approach not too over the top and noodly, but creating a good atmosphere to start off the day. Dan Lebowitz also found plenty of time to make his acoustic guitar sound more electric.
G. Love and his foot-stomping, hip-hop sprinkled blues was the meat of the sandwich on this night as he quickly won over any non-believers with his solo show. Just him and a guitar and often a harmonica as he offered up tunes about "Cold Beverages" and "Booty Calls." Sitting behind a row of amplifiers and in front of a row of guitars, he definitely did his job of warming up the crowd.
Jack Johnson made his way on stage and proceeded to run through nearly 30 songs of his flip-flop infused folk rock that set the perfect tone for a hot summer night. Opening the night with "You and Your Heart," Johnson played a bit of everything from his five-disc catalog, including "Upside Down" from the Curious George soundtrack early in the night for any kids in attendance.
Lebowitz joined Johnson for a handful of tunes toward the end of his set, though sounded like he was holding back for much of the time. Johnson was also joined by Hawaiian singer Paula Fuga for three songs, offering a female counterpart to the harmonies.
G. Love headed out on stage for the last three songs of the main set, including "Rodeo Clowns," a G. Love song that Johnson covered on his album On and On, and in which he guest starred in on the original recording in G. Love's 1999 album Philadelphonic.
Johnson offered up three solo acoustic tunes to kick off his encore, followed by a "all the bands are invited on stage" finale of "Better Together."
The Bad: No complaints here - it's exactly what I expected it to be. Of course, I could have done with out the frat-boy freakout when he played "The Joker."
The Verdict: This one wasn't about glitz and glam, it was simply about stripped down music and feel-good vibes.
