I've had my fingers crossed for this one for a while and, luckily, everything fell into place. The Smoker's Club Tour, co-headlined by Curren$y, Big K.R.I.T. and Smoke DZA, comes through Charlotte on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at Amos' Southend. Tickets and more details will be available in the meantime but expect good things from this show.
In Curren$y you get an artist who has managed to transcend his past affiliations with every major New Orleans camp. It was No Limit as a teenager, Cash Money/Young Money later, but it's been as an independent that he really blossomed doing music that may not suit radio but is just good hip hop. With the help and guidance of Dame Dash's DD172 artist collective, he's carved out a cool lane online, with dope records and even cooler visuals and he's also on board to re-launch the Roc-A-Fella Records when his Pilot Talk 2 album drops later this year.
Big K.R.I.T. is a rapper, producer and personal favorite of mine. The 23-year old Meridian, Miss. native has had a seemingly meteoric rise since the June release of his street album/mixtape, K.R.I.T. Wuz Here. Currently my album of the year, it combines elements of everything that makes Southern hip hop great. He's part Scarface, part UGK, part Tupac and Andre 3000 but completely unique in terms of his self-produced, soulful beats and truly introspective lyrics and his life. Less than 6 months since his National explosion, he's already signed a deal with Def Jam and been handed the keys to the Mississippi hip hop movement from David Banner, who was impressed by what he's done already.
Smoke DZA is a frequent contributor with both artists but the lesser known of the three. Thus far he's proven to be a great guest feature, steadily beasting his opportunities to get a verse on any of Curren$y or K.R.I.T.'s tracks.
