Forget all the fillers, sweeteners and additives. Bill Hanna serves up funky jazz on a platter with a side of the blues. The only thing you'll need is a stiff drink and a post-pleasure cigarette. $7-$10, Double Door Inn, www.doubledoorinn.com

Posted By on Tue, Nov 9, 2010 at 11:50 AM

I'm sure he interrupted a flight attendant mid-way through her safety speech, but anyway, here's a quick video of Kanye West breaking out a bit of "Gold Digger" on a recent Delta airlines flight.

The softer side of Shinedown

Posted By on Tue, Nov 9, 2010 at 11:30 AM

If you’ve ever heard a Shinedown song (and if you haven’t check out the video below), you know the one thing the band is known for – lead singer Brent Smith’s voice. All power, all rock. So you can imagine my surprise when I spoke to him via phone and he sounded, well, normal. Excited, hyper, full of energy mind you, but normal. And when the band brings their act to Charlotte tonight, you’ll see what I mean.

“We’re doing our first ever acoustic show” Smith describes, “but it’s a different acoustic show than anyone’s done before.” And he’s right. The band will perform some of their biggest hits from their first three albums and tell the stories behind the songs. “For the first time, our fans get to hear what we were thinking when we wrote ".45," "Second Chance," all our best stuff. We really wanted to tear down the walls and have a Storytellers type feel.”

And Smith fully understands who’s in charge with this style of show. “The audience is the boss," he says. "They tell us if we’re great, or not. We couldn’t come out and put on some watered down show for our fans. We couldn’t look at the man in the mirror every morning and be happy with that.” Some fans will even get the chance to ask the band questions during the show, contributing to the Storyteller feel.

This will be the last tour in support of the band’s latest album, The Sound of Madness. As for what’s next Smith says the band is already working on album number four. “We’re in LA before the tour starts to start recording, writing, and working on the next album. We hope to get it out next year, but it’s gotta be perfect, so we might be into 2012. We’re excited because it’s always a journey. Climb one mountain, go find another. Just keep going.”

As for tonight’s show at The Fillmore, Smith says don’t expect anything less intense than a full electric show. “You should expect to be losing your mind just like you would at any Shinedown show. Having the absolute time of your life. Come and raise hell. That’s what we’re gonna do.”

Shinedown performs tonight at The Fillmore – 8:30pm.

'Glee' "topples" Beatles record

Posted By on Mon, Nov 8, 2010 at 5:51 PM

OK, this story came out about a month ago, but it still bothers the hell out of me. A lot of publications, etc., are making a big deal out of the fact that the television show Glee has more singles in the top 100 and broke the record set by the Beatles for most hit singles.

Here's the problem I have with it — they aren't singing their own songs. The Beatles had 71 songs by The Beatles in the charts. Glee has songs by Britney Spears and dozens of other artists. Shouldn't those artists get the credit instead of this Glee cover band? They also fall of the charts quickly — 105 weeks so far while the Beatles were on the charts for 617 weeks.

Much like cover bands, I'm not a fan of the TV show either. If people want to watch the show, that's fine, but don't put them in the same sentence as The Beatles when it comes to album sales and setting records. Until that choral group can start writing songs of their own, they aren't going to get any credit from me.

Local Leak: Buckmaster's "The Ja Dance"

Posted By on Mon, Nov 8, 2010 at 2:50 PM

buckmaster

New music in this week's Local Leak from one of Charlotte's busiest DJ's, Buckmaster.

"The Ja Dance" is a tribal bass jam, he cooked up in just a few hours and has already added to his rotation at Dharma Lounge, where he's the resident DJ.

It's part of the Future Sounds of North America compilation, put out by Party Guy Records, which also features local bass producers, Clicks + Whistles.

The compilation hopes to shine light on bass as a genre and how it's moved out of regional pockets and away from regional sounds we're used to and transformed into this big pot of everything, that everyone is contributing to.

The native vibe of this record is ready to party right now but you can't buy the entire compilation until Dec. 13 when it's available on iTunes and a bunch of other outlets.

Local Leak: Clicks & Whistles' "When I Feel"

Posted By on Mon, Nov 8, 2010 at 11:54 AM

Another Local Leak from Charlotte's burgeoning bass scene.

This one from the duo, Clicks & Whistles (Jorge Hernandez and Peter Evans). It's low-key and soulful at the start then wakes up in a major way just before you were lulled into the subdued groove. Great stuff.

Video: "Beatties Ford Boyz"

Posted By on Mon, Nov 8, 2010 at 10:55 AM

I don't know how this video slipped under my radar for so long but here's a video from Charlotte rappers J-Face, Wyl-Out Slim and Mr. F-150 for their song, "Beatties Ford Boyz."

Every hood has their anthem and for the Beatties Ford corridor, not the Hopewell High part but the real part that runs from Johnson C. Smith to a little past Sunset, this is it.

Have I grown out of this sound? Sure but if I was in high school, I probably would've bumped this ad nauseam. Shot everywhere from West Charlotte Recreation Center to Mr. C's and One Man & A Van Car Wash, right next door, it's a virtual hood tour of the area I grew up in and strangely vocabulary lesson. Bruh is a swiss-army knife of a word around here.

I'll spare you the criticism that it reminds me of a Waka Flocka Flame video knockoff (people hanging from the fences, c'mon son!) and that there's only so many ways you can rap about shooting people in the face but for everyone growing up in that area (who understand that shit's all figurative), enjoy.

I only wish there were more West Charlotte High School shots but then again, they don't need any more media scrutiny and I'm not complaining about that.
