3rd Annual Grammy Predictions

Posted By on Fri, Feb 11, 2011 at 12:04 PM

It's that time of year again, when I bore you with a long list of Grammy Award predictions. That's right — I give my thoughts on all 109 categories.

In 2009, there were predictions for 110 categories. I only got 49 right, but would have had 61 if I went with first instincts.

In 2010, there were predictions for 109 categories. I did a little better as I got 52 correct.

Now, without further ado, here are this year's selections and comments:

Record Of The Year — "Empire State of Mind" was released in 2009, so it shouldn't even be included here. It would be hilarious to hear someone say, "The winner is, 'Fuck You'!"

Quiana Zenobia, Johnson Valentine Bash, Sugar Glyder, Ed E. Ruger (2-11-2011)

Posted By on Fri, Feb 11, 2011 at 8:21 AM

QUIANA ZENOBIA This independent soul songstress was brought up on music. With a grandmother who was a classically trained organist and a mother who sang, it was only natural for her to take that love of music and run. And that she did, starting with the church choir and moving on from gospel to jazz and soul. Her honest lyrics ooze with soul and have a certain grit to them that's cool. Fat Snacks Band backing. Wine Up. www.wine-up.com. (Mike McCray)

JOHNSON VALENTINE BASH Wes and Chris Johnson, of Charlotte pop combo Hardcore Lounge, return with their annual (19th and counting) Valentine's fundraising bash with proceeds benefiting RAIN (Regional AIDS Interfaith Network). An evening of pop, lounge, rock and Americana will be on tap for this shindig that also features guests performing with Hardcore Lounge along with Mike Strauss Band warming up and DJ Jason Cooper spinning records. $7. Snug Harbor. www.snugrock.com. (Samir Shukla)

SUGAR GLYDER Charlotte quartet Sugar Glyder continues to write hard pop and moody rock numbers that are just the right kind of smooth around the edges. Their songs are catchy, hummable and fully developed with rock layers and plenty of "radio stars in the making" overtones. This is the CD Release gig for their new recording, Lovers at Lightspeed. Also on the bill are House of Fools, Ethnographers, and Oh No Fiasco. $8. Amos' Southend. www.amossouthend.com. (Shukla)

ED E. RUGER'S CD RELEASE PARTY Looking for good local hip-hop? Greensboro's Ed E. Ruger is releasing a new CD, but it's the local support he's getting that's just as noteworthy. Among those on the bill are A. Moss and Dinero Farrar, Ty Bru, F. Dux and Ike Turnah. Those wondering where to find solid rap artists from the Queen City area should look no further. $8. 9 p.m. Tremont Music Hall. www.tremontmusichall.com. (Jeff Hahne)

Project/Object w/Ike Willis tonight (2-10-2011)

Posted By on Thu, Feb 10, 2011 at 3:26 PM

PROJECT/OBJECT W/ IKE WILLIS I'm not a fan of cover and tribute bands, but when a band can include original members and play note-for-note intricate compositions by Frank Zappa, it's worth taking notice. Not only do these guys make it sound just like Zappa did, but they often get former band members to come along for the ride. Though the rest of the band has undergone lineup changes over the years, singer/guitarist Willis is a regular with the P/O guys. Guitarist Denny Walley will also be at this show. $15. Visulite Theatre. www.visulite.com.

Bonnaroo lineup coming Feb. 15

Posted By on Wed, Feb 9, 2011 at 4:02 PM

Finally, there has been some kind of confirmation... The Bonnaroo page on Facebook has posted that the lineup will be announced on Feb. 15.

The swirling rumors at this point are that the main acts for Friday are Arcade Fire and My Morning Jacket. Saturday's pre-headliner is The Black Keys. Sunday will feature Robert Plant and the Band of Joy as well as Widespread Panic.

I've heard a variety of rumors for the main Saturday headliner — from Eminem and Jay-Z to Rage Against the Machine.

On Feb. 15, we'll know the truth.

Bonnaroo continues clue releases

Posted By on Tue, Feb 8, 2011 at 11:54 AM

Just like last year, the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival is slowly giving away clues as to who will be performing at this year's event.

Taking place on June 9-12 in Manchester, Tenn., at this point, I'd say it's a "your guess is as good as mine" when it comes to figuring out who will play.

Clue 1 - A trip to space thwarted by a speckled lad's demise. A watershed moment otherwise.

Clue 2 - Cecilia's dress code: Sheer

Clue 3 - Still up. A month now, maybe two. Don't call the priest, just find my guru.

Clue 4 - A veteran and magistrate, or a character of sorts. A throne one cannot abdicate, of which a crab can make a fort.

Clue 5 - Red, White and blue are all a part of this young palette. A farm heathen disguised among giants, the only Ten I see.

Clue 6 - From one BoRe to another, a war rages amongst champions. We're calling for divine intervention.

Clue 7 - Sun shines on these former nannies; a persistence of sound persists.

Clue 8 - A maudlin pioneer living on the fringe; not one to plateau.

Clue 9 - Stop short of a march with this ruffian. It's a heavier endeavor.

The obvious would be David Bowie and Paul Simon for the first two, but most agree that would be too simple. Some people assume the third is The Strokes. Others include Florence and the Machine, The Veils, Crystal Castles. Daft Punk and Jack White are also popular choices.

Any ideas?

If we use the theory that some bands come back every other year, we could possibly Janelle Monae, White Rabbits, The Low Anthem, Grace Potter, The Decemberists, Cage the Elephant among them.

Meanwhile, it looks like Gregg Allman has confirmed. Other artists that have said they will peform this year include Big Boi, Black Star, Robert Plant and the Band of Joy and Bruce Hornsby.

UPDATE: Fans are getting frustrated.

Live review: Robert Plant and the Band of Joy

Posted By on Tue, Feb 8, 2011 at 11:42 AM

Robert Plant and the Band of Joy w/ North Mississippi Allstars Duo LuCo

Ovens Auditorium

Feb. 7, 2011

Plant3

The Deal: Former Led Zeppelin singer takes his latest act to Charlotte for, surprisingly, not sold out show.

NorthMiss

The Good: The night got started with a 40-minute set by brothers Luther and Cody Dickenson performing as the North Mississippi Allstars Duo LuCo. Sounding a bit like the Black Keys, Luther spread his guitar wings and let riffs soar while Cody set down the rhythm. The duo played some North Miss songs such as "The Meeting," while also throwing in some covers, such as R.L. Burnside's "Old Black Mattie" and their version of "When I Lay My Burden Down" that had the crowd offering thuderous applause. Too often an opening band is ignored or simple time-filler, but the brothers did about the best job I've ever seen of warming up a crowd and getting them ready for the headliner.
