Motorhead, Clutch, Valient Thorr
The Fillmore Charlotte
March 5, 2011
The Deal: Motorhead rumbles back into Charlotte with Clutch and North Carolina's own Valient Thorr.
The Good: The night got started with North Carolina quintet Valient Thorr and their brand of metal infused with hints of Southern Rock. Singer Valient Himself stripped his shirt off in quick time and found his way into the crowd to start a brief mosh pit in the middle of the band's set. They also dedicated a song to The Milestone, the location of many a Thorr concert in the past. The singer jumps and dances around in some kind of warped aerobics manner that draws in the audience and gets the entire band sweating within minutes.
Clutch was the meat of the sandwich, providing a 50-minute set of its blues-infused rock. The band's set included "50,000 Unstoppable Watts," "Electric Worry" and "The Mob Goes Wild." Singer Neil Fallon opened the set with a few more mellow songs on rhythm guitar before setting it aside and letting himself release more energy and get into the music a bit more. The band offered a calm before the storm during the set, while fueling the crowd and winning over fans.
Lemmy is the ever-charismatic frontman without having to put too much effort into it. He's simply Lemmy. He walked out on to the stage to an eruption of screams and applause and showed why he is the legendary metal mayhem creator. His charged up bass work and growled style of singing are more melodic than the casual onlooker might think. The band's set was all meat and potatoes without unnecessary filler or banter. There's a reason why each show starts out with the simple line, "We are Motorhead. We play rock 'n' roll."
The Bad: Motorhead was last in Charlotte at the same venue in September of 2009. At that time, they played a longer set (15 songs plus three in the encore vs. 12 songs and one encore) what a difference a year and a half makes.
The Verdict: Motorhead might have played a handful of more songs last time around, but the power and fury was just as strong. Clutch and Valient Thorr held their own in the opening spots creating for a long night of solid rock.
Valient Thorr made the most of their small stage area and one could only imagine what kind of destruction they'd bring to a small crowd at the Milestone. Catch them if they're back in town.
