Noise ordinance update

Posted By on Mon, Mar 21, 2011 at 5:38 PM

The Community Safety Committee met on Monday for the next round of discussions on the proposed noise ordinance changes. The main focus of that portion of the meeting was to hear public comments about the noise ordinance proposal.

Before hearing comments, city attorney Mac McCarley announced that the city of Charlotte has dropped the proposal as far as it is concerned with prohibiting live, outdoor, amplified music within 400 feet of residentially zoned areas. McCarley said "that swept up too many establishments that were not a problem."

During Monday's meeting, the committee heard comments from sides who are for and against the noise ordinance. The council noted that they have already received a large amount of feedback on the issue.

Uptown Amphitheatre gets new sponsor

Posted By on Mon, Mar 21, 2011 at 9:57 AM

The venue formerly known as the Uptown Amphitheatre and then Road Runner Mobile Amphitheatre has changed sponsors and will now be known as Time Warner Cable Uptown Amphitheatre... not to be confused with the uptown arena known as Time Warner Cable Arena.

Maybe if I call the Arena the "Cable Box," the Amphitheatre will be known as "The Satellite Dish"? I'm open to suggestions...

Langhorne Slim tonight (3/21/11)

Posted By on Mon, Mar 21, 2011 at 8:32 AM

Langhorne Slim Singer/songwriter Langhorne Slim’s voice is a treat and his words ring true with a revivalist take on bluegrass and folk. Slim is not afraid to use horns as an uplifting factor and the guitar strolls right along while he adds soul-drenched chorus into the mix, coaxing all to merrily sing along. With Matrimony. $10/$12. Loudermilks, The New Familiars tonight (3/19/11)

Posted By on Sat, Mar 19, 2011 at 8:32 AM

Loudermilks Long-standing Charlotte music fans will remember the Edwards bros. — Alan and Chad — as the prime movers behind Lou Ford, rural rockers as infamous for biting the feeding hand as for their aphorism-rich songs and transcendent sibling harmonies. They’ve cobbled together a new five-piece (including ex-Vetiver bassist Brent Dunn), added some fiddle and keys, and whipped up a setlist of new songs plus a few unrecorded LF stowaways. But the fundamentals remain unimpeachable: These gents write some of the catchiest, most heart-rending country rock around. It’s all rather sad, but comfortingly familiar. With the Overmountain Men and Ken Will Morton & the Wholly Ghosts. $8. Snug Harbor. www.snugrock.com. (John Schacht)

The New Familiars Fans of Charlotte’s finest roots-rock quartet The New Familiars have had this day marked on their calendar for some time. Only problem was that lineup changes and other delays kept pushing it back. But the day has finally arrived for people to get their hands on the band’s latest album, Between the Moon and Morning Light. No doubt that it was well worth the wait. With Danny Barnes. $10. Visulite Theatre. www.visulite.com. (Jeff Hahne)

10-in-10 CD reviews

Posted By on Fri, Mar 18, 2011 at 10:23 AM

Each Friday, we review 10 recently released CDs in 10 words each:

The Steven L. Smith Band Pieces — Hints of honky tonk roll through decent bar band sound.

Deadlock Bizarre World — Female vocals help break up the horrible cookie monster growling.

Caitlin Rose Own Side Now — Nashville-born singer goes with an old-style sound… meh.

The Damnwells No One Listens to the Band Anymore — Brooklyn indie rockers release fourth album — hints of pop within.

Daniel O’Donnell Moon Over Ireland — In time for St. Patty’s Day, but kinda boring, sleepy.

Various Artists Rango Soundtrack — Mostly instrumental soundtrack features a few tracks by Los Lobos.

Screeching Weasel First World Manifesto — Chicago punk band releases its first new material since 2000.

The Dirtball Nervous System — Kottonmouth Kings’ Dirtball has elements of Eminem — with weaker lyrics.

Various Artists Dance Mix USA — Mostly unknown songs get remixed into monotonous, thumping club tunes.

Tony Castles No Service EP — Brooklyn band’s brand of freak funk has some quality pieces.
