The Whigs, Company of Thieves, GogoPilot
Neighborhood Theatre
April 14, 2011
The Deal: Athens, Ga., trio has played just about everywhere else in town, so why not play its first show at the Neighborhood Theatre?
The Good: The night got started with a 30-minute set by Charlotte's GogoPilot. Playing a straight-forward brand of mellow rock, the quartet was aided by Reeve Coobs on vocals. Compared of the music that was yet to come, it seemed like a bit of an odd fit for the night, only in the energy they were giving off from the stage.
When Company of Thieves took the stage, I wasn't sure what to expect, but was immediately drawn in by singer Genevieve Schatz. Her stage presence was overwhelming as she sang, danced and drew listeners in with arm movements and motions. It took a few moments before I fully could take in all that was going on musically by the indie rock band. Interesting guitar work, keyboards layered on top, and Schatz singing and howling... by the time the band's set was over, I was thinking, "Wow, I need to see them again, because I'm not quite sure what just happened." And I mean that in a good way.
The Whigs hit the stage a little after 11 p.m., but the crowd was fully energized and ready to go. Kicking off the show with "Like a Vibration," the trio was all business. The band followed that up with "Already Young" as singer Parker Gispert bounced around the stage on one foot. Doing little to address the crowd, the band performed song after song as drummer Julian Dorio hammered away and bassist Timothy Deaux kept the low end steady.
While still touring in support of 2010's In the Dark, the band also played a few new songs that fit right into the mix. Gispert found time to leap off the drum riser toward the end of its set before returning for a two-song encore that included the first song of the band's first album, Give 'Em All a Big Fat Lip, "Nothing Is Easy."
The Bad: No complaints.
The Verdict: Company of Thieves was a nice surprise, and The Whigs never disappoint. The band had carried its own weight last summer alongside The Black Keys and Kings of Leon, but showed they are strong enough to headline all their own.
