The Deal: 25 Minutes to Go releases its newest CD, This Time's For Serious, at The Milestone on bill that included 2013 Wolves, Calormen and Hectagons.

The Good: The night started off on the small bar stage of the Casbah with a hammering set by 2013 Wolves. Robby Childers drove the drums forward while Neal MF Harper layered on the bluesy, distorted riffs on top of it. Sure there were vocals splattered in here and there, but the Wolves create a swirling atmosphere of energy over the crowd that started things off on the right foot. Building their setlist in the moment, the duo knows when to let things build and smolder and when to crash the cymbals and call it done.

The crowd moved quickly back to the main room for a rare performance by Charlotte's Calormen. Featuring members of Harvard, Wretched and Control, the punk music is charged up through a wall of sound with screamed vocals. They've got a great punk energy to them and quickly won the crowd over.

Hectagons was up third, offering a blend of instrumental music that fused songs together into painted pictures of drums, standup bass and the intricate guitar work of Wyley Buck Boswell. Acting like a man possessed, Boswell picked, plucked and strummed his way through songs that fused elements of jazz and metal. The standup bass of Korey Dudley and the drumwork (and brief saxophone work) by Richard Edwin Culp helps complete the band's sound.

The night wrapped up with a raucous set by 25 Minutes to Go, celebrating the release of the band's third album, This Time's For Serious. From the opening notes of "One More Gin" to the final encore singalong of their cover of "Friends in Low Places," the band and crowd made it feel like one big family party in the middle of the Milestone.

Milestone owner Jonathan Battleship Hughes found time to thank his friends and family for all of their support and appeared to enjoy the time he found on stage to truly let loose. Band members dripped with sweat as they performed a number of songs, including crowd favorite "Get Some Drinks In." The band's music hints at metal and punk but might be best described as a heavier Social Distortion.

The Bad: No complaints.

The Verdict: Sweaty, rowdy, shirtless fun for all involved. It was exactly what I expected... and more. A quartet of strong, talented bands from the local scene — each could have easily headlined the night, if not for being a CD release party.
