Live review: Judacula Fest

Judacula Fest: Hungry Girl, Jason Michel, Emotron, Mr. Invisible, 2013 Wolves, 25 Minutes to Go

Featuring Art by Robert Childers, Andy Fenstermaker, Kelly Keith, Justin Coco, Frank Balthazar, Matthew Stover

Tremont Music Hall

July 1, 2011

The Deal: After I had experienced such amazing splendor and recognition of our local creative scene at the last art and music showcase at Tremont Music Hall, Judacula Fest was a no-brainer addition to my schedule. Although the line-up was different, it still incorporated some of our best local talent and regional delights that have become local favorites we are trying to coax into moving here. Hungry Girl, Jason Michel, Mr. Invisible, Emotron, 25 Minutes to Go and 2013 Wolves were to grace the stage and the walls, to feature the artwork of Kelly Keith, Andy Doorbum Fenstermaker, Robert Childers, Justin Coco, Frank Balthazar, Matthew Stover and more. I felt honored to be able to experience another festivity revolving around the multi-faceted creativity that surrounds us every day.

11th Annual Plaza Midwood Pig Pickin', Independent's Day Explosion, Langhorne Slim tonight (7/3/11)

Posted By on Sun, Jul 3, 2011 at 9:10 AM

11th Annual Plaza Midwood Pig Pickin' Is there anything more awesome our nation has gifted the world than rock music? I think not, Osama. And is there a better Charlotte block party celebrating that fact than the Annual P-M Pig Pickin’ hoedown? Again: “Nyet.” If you’re new to town, this is a great opp to hear some of the city’s best acts while celebrating good ol’ American over-indulgence with booze, BBQ, and stuff that explodes. So as the sun sets on our Empire and Lord of the Flies times approach, rock out and wave your sparklers till Wall Street sticks you on the spit (if they haven’t already). Starring the Belmont Playboys, Temperance League, Sea of Cortez, the Aqualads and Modern Primitives. Free. 4 p.m. Gordon Street between Snug Harbor and The Diamond. (John “Founding Father” Schacht)

Independent's Day Explosion Charlotte’s built a strong community of talented unsigned artists, and what better way to celebrate the freedom of Independence Day than toasting to the fact that none of them have to deal with label politics and bullshit. With more than a dozen acts slated to perform, including Mr. Invisible, Define Jones, Cutty Boi, Charles Herron, JJ Bass and more, it’s your chance to see who’s been plugging away toward their dream, deal or no deal. $10-$12. Amos’ Southend. www.amossouthend.com. (Mike McCray)

Langhorne Slim This Pennsylvania-born, Portland-based indie folk and soul artist can throw down on vocals, guitar, banjo or harmonica and has also toured with Charlotte’s Avett Brothers, Drive-By Truckers and Cake, among others. His songwriting is acutely descriptive, overwhelmingly earnest. He aims for a gospel-like experience in every one of his live shows and will be part of three days of music and festivities at USNWC as they celebrate the holiday. Free. U.S. National Whitewater Center. www.usnwc.org. (McCray)

Weekenders tonight (7/2/11)

Posted By on Sat, Jul 2, 2011 at 9:10 AM

Weekenders Mashing up elements of “Sweater Song”-era Weezer, MC5 jams and insert retro garage rock favorites here, this Charlotte trio doesn’t fuck around with needless subtleties or nuance. Their 2010 release, the seven-song teaser I Want You (Kinnikinnik Records), was a catchy and promising 18-minute tour through the band’s influences. This gig is a fundraiser for the August Recess Fest (Google the RF blogspot and luxuriate in the killer lineup), but stands on its own as a fine Friday night out. With Luz, the Have and the Have Nots, and Veda Woolf. Snug Harbor. www.snugrock.com.

10-in-10 CD reviews

Posted By on Fri, Jul 1, 2011 at 10:13 AM

Each Friday, we review 10 recently released CDs in 10 words each:

Dave Alvin Eleven Eleven — Solid blues music, but the talking style of vocals disappointed.

EG Kight Lip Service — Georgia Songbird offers Southern-accented, vibrato-vocaled, blue-infused album.

Greg Nagy Fell Toward None — Soulful vocals fail to set blues musician apart from pack.

Nikka Costa Pro*Whoa — Six-song EP brings soulful singer into new pop direction.

The Wilders Broken Pieces — Roots band plays a slow, sleepy brand of country folk.

Seun Anikulapo Kuti & Egypt 80 From Africa With Fury: Rise — In front of his father’s band, son keeps energy flowing.

Matt Nathanson Modern Love — Catchy tunes, strong songwriter will likely land songs on TV.

John Common and Blinding Flashes of Light Beautiful Empty — Acoustic album set apart through its orchestral arrangements, soulful vocals.

Potluck Rhymes and Resin — More generic hip-hop centered around act of smoking pot.

The Dear Hunter The Color Spectrum — Bands latest album is a roller coaster of good, mediocre.

Elizabeth's own Block Party this weekend

Posted By on Fri, Jul 1, 2011 at 9:16 AM

The classic Fourth of July block party gets you out of your driveway and into the neighborhood this weekend. On Sunday, July 3, Kennedy's, The Philosopher's Stone and Jackalope Jack's are uniting for a day of food and family fun. At 1 pm, celebrate Independence Day with all kinds of free activities, including dunk tanks. The kids can leap around in a bouncy house while the grown ups can try a water slide (proportionally sized) or $2 beer specials.

In case the Plaza Midwood Pig Pickin' isn't your fancy or your neck of the woods, check out what Elizabeth has to offer. In lieu of barbeque, the Red White and Blue Block Party has a Hot Dog-eating tournament as one of Sunday's highlights. The winner (or "weiner" as you'll probably be called) gets $300. Register for cornhole throwing or hot dog-eating online at Kennedy's.

Each venue has its own schedule of live performers, making it pretty easy to slip between shows and bands.

The Blackhounds tonight (7/1/11)

Posted By on Fri, Jul 1, 2011 at 9:10 AM

The Blackhounds So what’s wrong with solidly written and performed songs that channel Americana and classic, time-tested rock ’n’ roll? Nothing fancy here, no tricks up the sleeves as these regional rockers crank the amps, howl into the mic and churn out rockers and bluesy ballads. $8. Double Door Inn. www.doubledoorinn.com.
