Live review: Southside Punx, 25 Minutes to Go, Worship This, Boolow

Jonathan and Stephanie Hughes' Anniversary/Love Grows Benefit featuring Miss Shevaughn & Yuma Wray, Boolow, Worship This, 25 Minutes to Go, Southside Punx and Gore Gore Luchadores

The Milestone Club

July 22, 2011

The Deal: Milestone owner Jonathan Hughes and his wife, Stephanie, probably share the most intense love I have ever come into contact with. Just being next to them, you can feel that passion radiating from their connection. Five years ago, these two lovebirds tied the knot and have been going strong ever since. In celebration of their anniversary, The Milestone held a fantastic benefit show with a cap off of the Gore Gore Luchadores wrestling for Love Grows, a Uganda-based charity organization founded by Andy and Michelle Wilson. I was sure the night would be one to remember for some time. However, I didn't realize that it would be so extremely awesome.

Reeve Coobs

The Evening Muse

July 22, 2011

The Deal: Singer/songwriter and vocal powerhouse Reeve Coobs delights a packed house at The Evening Muse.

The Good: Reeve combines the vocal qualities of pop singers like Colbie Caillat and Celine Dion and infuses that sweet-but-soulful energy into folk rock songs that amalgamate the styles of artists like John Mayer and Edwin McCain. The resulting tunes display a songwriting prowess and impeccable vocal control unmatched by any unsigned singer/songwriter I’ve ever seen.

T-Model Ford tonight (7/25/11)

Posted By on Mon, Jul 25, 2011 at 8:50 AM

T-Model Ford T’s raw, raucous, no bullshit blues comes pouring out of the amps as hard as the life he’s lived. He’s done time behind bars, drunk ungodly amounts of hooch, and strummed his badass, rickety guitar for most of his 70 plus years. This is real, hardtimes folk and blues. Most blues record labels won’t touch him, except the famously indie imprint Fat Possum records, the compilers of real, American blues. With 2013 Wolves. $8. Snug Harbor. www.snugrock.com.

Birds With Teeth tonight (7/24/11)

Posted By on Sun, Jul 24, 2011 at 8:50 AM

Birds With Teeth Love it or hate it, the pop punk machine continues to pass along bands with high energy and smart-assed lyrics. Even though they sling out some sarcastic lyrics at higher tempos, Birds With Teeth is more than the three-chord tracks and bathroom humor that was big seven years ago. Locally disrespectful, the quartet moves between smirking songs like “Can’t Even Kill Myself” to more complex structures. The group won’t be talking about mooning their high school class, but it’s probably best that type of music has either grown up or drifted away. With Lucky Five, Hadwynn, RioBravo $7. Tremont Music Hall. www.tremontmusichall.com.

Amy Winehouse found dead in her London apartment

Posted By on Sat, Jul 23, 2011 at 12:07 PM

Singer Amy Winehouse, 27, was found dead in her apartment in London today, numerous news outlets are reporting. The singer had various troubles with rehab and substance abuse over the years and recently had a tumultuous performance in Europe after which her remaining concert dates were canceled.

It's a sad story for a singer who now joins the "27 Club" with musicians such as Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain as talented musicians and artists who died at age 27.

While she should be known for this —

She may be more known for this:

Twilight actor hits Charlotte with his band, 100 Monkeys

Posted By on Fri, Jul 22, 2011 at 1:05 PM

I was kinda curious about the band 100 Monkeys, having not heard of them before they were booked to perform at The Fillmore Charlotte for tonight's gig.

Turns out the band formed a few years ago out in California... oh yeah, and one of the band members has been in the Twilight movies. :::cue teenage girls screaming:::

Jackson Rathbone plays Jasper Hale in the Twilight Saga and plays the guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, mandolin, trumpet and harmonica in addition to singing. One of his bandmates, Jerad Anderson, is also an actor.

The band released its major label debut, Liquid Zoo, on June 28. It's not as polished as you might expect — hints of '60s rock and punk are sprinkled in there.

Update: Wicked ear buds

Posted By on Fri, Jul 22, 2011 at 12:29 PM

So, almost exactly one year ago to the day, I received some Wicked ear buds and reviewed them. They've been great — solid quality music and comfortable to wear.

I must now report an update and say — the ear buds have died. I guess countless times of unplugging them from my computer has killed them. The wire has frayed and now they no longer transmit sound...

R.I.P. ear buds. You served me well, but only for a year.
