Joan of Arc bring experimental sound tonight (8/13/11)

Joan of Arc The dis on these Chicago veterans used to be that experimentation took precedence over songwriting; were they an art project or a rock band? Between atonal aggro and delicate acoustics; Tim Kinsella’s occasionally over-the-top vocals; a propensity for uber-ironic LP titles (So Much Staying Alive and Lovelessness), and a sense that sometimes they were just being willfully difficult, JoA have been both critical darlings and occasional punching bags. But coming out of the aughts, and streamlined down to a quartet, JoA seems to have turned back to their (slightly) more trad Cap’n Jazz (an emo band that didn’t suck) roots, as this year’s re-impassioned Life Like suggests. Whatever they’re up to, landing JoA is a great coup for Recess Fest. With Implodes, Blossoms, and a Moenda reunion. $10. The Milestone. www.themilestoneclub.com.
