Kill Devil Hill's raucous hard rock tonight (10/7/11)

Posted By on Fri, Oct 7, 2011 at 12:00 AM

Kill Devil Hill Seekers of grinding hard rock, the kind that’s blues-ingested and heat blasted with rat-a-tat drumming, will dig Kill Devil Hill. The quartet features Rex Brown, (ex-Pantera, Down) and Vinny Appice (ex-Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, Dio), whose ballsy rock, cue aforementioned bands of the combo, pretty much sets up a brewski-drenched, testosterone-fueled night. With Planet 9 and 21st Century Goliath. $12-$14. Tremont Music Hall. www.tremontmusichall.com. (Samir Shukla)

Joshua James' expansive acoustic tunes tonight (10/7/11)

Posted By on Fri, Oct 7, 2011 at 12:00 AM

Joshua James The Utah-based singer-songwriter conveys huge depths of emotion and intimacy with his feathery vocals. There’s a similarity to Ray LaMontagne in his style. Don’t let a folk genre fool you into lumping him in with the rest of the male, acoustic performers you’ve heard. With HoneyHoney. $10. The Evening Muse. www.theeveningmuse.com. (Jeff Hahne)

Nurses' textured, avant-pop pieces tonight (10/8/11)

Posted By on Fri, Oct 7, 2011 at 12:00 AM

Nurses Apples Acre, this Portland, Ore., trio’s 2009 release, got them lumped in with the Animal Collective school of avant-pop, and the new one, Dracula, probably belongs there, too, at least on paper: skittering beats, synth smudges, shadowy guitar reverb and overlapping vocals, some of the songs bordering on ’80s dance-able. The trick here initially is getting past the pinched squawk of singer Aaron Johnson, whose singing voice isn’t exactly soothing. There are moments, too, when Nurses could reach for something more substantial, something greater, perhaps even epic, but seem disinclined to do so in favor of texture for texture’s sake. With Dominant Legs. $8-$10. Tremont Music Hall. www.tremontmusichall.com. (John Schacht)

Sublime Journey fuses North and South Indian classical music tonight (10/8/11)

Posted By on Fri, Oct 7, 2011 at 12:00 AM

Sublime Journey Gaurav Majumdar is an accomplished sitar player dwelling in Hindustani (North Indian classical) music. Nirmala Rajasekar is an astute proponent of the veena (an Indian stringed instrument that precedes the sitar by centuries). She is a Carnatic (South Indian classical) musician. This concert offers the confluence of the two styles with two percussionists using tabla (Hindustani music percussion) and mridangam (percussion of choice of Carnatic musicians), adding the rhythmic backdrop. The jugalbandi (duet) concert begins at 6pm. $10-$25. Tate Hall, CPCC. www.ipaac.org/GauravNirmala.htm. (Samir Shukla)

Live review: Other Lives

Other Lives w/ Mates of State, Yawn
Visulite Theatre
Oct. 5, 2011

IMG_5076.jpg

Spread out along the front of the stage — pushed there by the piles of equipment for the yet-to-perform headliner — Oklahoma quintet Other Lives drew the audience to the front of the room, if only so the small crowd could get a closer look at the conglomerate of instruments being played.

The band's music fuses the psychedelia of early Pink Floyd with Thom Yorke-esque vocals on a mellow-yet-intricate backdrop. They may have been sandwiched between the stale indie-pop of the appropriately named Yawn and the energetic indie-pop of headliner Mates of State, but Other Lives did enough to impress those in attendance at the Visulite Theatre on Oct. 5.

Richard Buckner performs work from latest LP tonight (10/6/11)

Posted By on Thu, Oct 6, 2011 at 12:00 AM

Richard Buckner Given the curse that Buckner’s latest LP passed through, it’s a miracle there’s a record of it at all: recording gear failures, computer crashes, a stolen laptop, and still, Our Blood, his eighth full-length, is being hailed by some as his best work (I’m not “some,” but it’s still damn fine). Live, Buckner — a mountain of a man — can silence a room using just a guitar and a voice whose longing and regret he wields like surgical tools on the heart. If you’re secure enough to go to that place, nobody is a better guide. $12. Late show at the Evening Muse. www.theeveningmuse.com. (John Schacht)

Other Lives bring Okie-style, spacey soundscapes tonight (10/5/11)

Posted By on Wed, Oct 5, 2011 at 12:00 AM

Other Lives Mining elements of space rock, these Okies compose soundscapes with classical instrumentation, a sound that floats about merrily and settles into a sort of meditative realm. The combo creates cinematic scores that take cues from Brit rockers who use orchestral touches as intros or transitions. The Other Lives take those classical flourishes and expand them into a full sound. Opening for Mates of State. $15-$18. Visulite Theatre. www.visulite.com. (Samir Shukla)

Bob Crawford on leave from Avett Brothers

Posted By on Tue, Oct 4, 2011 at 12:36 PM

Crawford.jpg

Avett Brothers bassist Bob Crawford posted on the band's Web site last week that he is taking a leave of absence from the band to focus on the health of his daughter, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Here's what he had to say:

One month ago today my wife found our 22 month old daughter, Hallie, in her crib having a seizure. Paramedics rushed her to the hospital where an MRI revealed a brain tumor approximately one quarter of the size of her brain.

Surgeons were able to remove 90% of the tumor and decided to stop there as her vital signs were unsteady. Following surgery she suffered a stroke. Her condition was critical for the next several days as her brain continued to swell. In an attempt to save her remaining good brain she was placed in a coma for five days.

Since being removed from the coma, Hallie has undergone a second brain surgery, has been waking up, and is doing her best to recover quickly so she get ready for the next phase of her fight against cancer.

The tumor is a Grade 3 Ependymoma. This is a very rare, but deadly brain tumor that effects roughly 100 children a year in the United States. We do not know what Hallie's next step is in her treatment. Her situation is very fluid and there are a number of complicating factors, but we do know that she is fighting hard every day.

My wife Melanie and I would like to thank everyone for their love, care, and support during the most difficult time in our lives. I would like to thank everyone for their understanding of the gravity of this situation and ask for respect to our privacy. When people ask us what they can do to help, we ask them to pray for Hallie's recovery. We feel that God has already worked miracles through Hallie and we pray they keep coming.

Someday I will return to the stage with my brothers. When that will be I can not say. We are truly living one day at a time.

Thank you again for your love and support for my family during this time.

I look forward to seeing you all again soon.

Bob Crawford

There's no word on who will replace Crawford for the band's upcoming tour dates at this time.

Live review: Voltaire, This Way to the Egress, Hellblinki

Voltaire, This Way to the Egress, Hellblinki
The Milestone
Sept. 28, 2011

Arriving at the Milestone, I was not expecting what I stumbled upon. Seas of top hats and corsets entered the venue and there was more black clothing, bondage wear and skull-adorned outfits than you would come into contact with hanging out outside of a Hot Topic. Goth kids had taken over, a rare occasion for this place that holds a reputation for its more punk rock roots. I was in a trance of people watching, enjoying every moment and every conversation I stumbled upon — from the latest Dr. Who episodes to taxidermy to the actual anticipated events of the night. I was eavesdropping left and right and one thing was for certain, The Black Unicorn Cabaret Tour was in full swing. The Milestone I've come to love was a completely different atmosphere and I knew I was in for an interesting night full of sexually enticing burlesque along with music I've come to adore along and some I had yet to discover.
