Against Me!
Amos' Southend
June 14, 2012

Toward the end of Against Me!'s June 14, 2012, concert at Amos' Southend, singer Laura Jane Grace addressed the crowd. With two hands on the microphone and sweaty locks of hair clinging to her black eyeliner, she said, "Thank you so much for coming out and showing your support. It means a lot to us and it means a lot to me..."

The band launched into fan favorite "Pints of Guiness" as a massive mosh pit broke out with crowd surfers floating above the swirling mass of people. Against Me! has played that song hundreds of times over the years, but, like most of the band's music, it has a renewed energy thanks to a reinvigorated stage presence. Aside from the heavy-handed hammering of drummer Jay Weinberg, who joined the band in December, Grace displays enthusiasm not seen before in the Florida punk band.

Since the singer formerly known as Tom Gabel made the announcement that she was transgender and would be known as Laura Jane Grace, there's been a lot of talk of her bravery, strength and unknown future. Little has been said about her excitement and comfort level that were so easy to see on this night.

Vertical Horizon at the N.C. Music Factory tonight (6/15/2012)

Posted By on Fri, Jun 15, 2012 at 9:15 AM

VERITCAL HORIZON If you didn't already know what to expect from the dudes who quietly ushered alt-rock radio out of the '90s with their bland single, "Everything You Want," Vertical Horizon have made it easy with their guest drummer on the band's latest album - Rush's Neil Peart. We know what you're thinking - someone's still paying these guys to make music? Yes, and it gets worse. 2009's Burning the Days delivers a smorgasbord of light, mid-tempo alt-rock, landing the quartet somewhere between Creed and Tool on the sonic spectrum. It's about as safe and unchallenging as you can get, but then again, it's an oldies one-hit wonder. What else did you expect? $5. N.C. Music Factory.

Dirty Dozen Brass Band at the Visulite Theatre tonight (6/16/2012)

Posted By on Fri, Jun 15, 2012 at 8:21 AM

DIRTY DOZEN BRASS BAND The New Orleans brass band tradition dates back to 19th century funeral marches, with players blowing dutiful dirges before turning on a dime and busting out the party tunes. Crescent City revivalists the Dirty Dozen Brass Band builds on those traditional tight arrangements. But the addition of steamy funk, deep soul and jazzy swing transforms the old timey field recording ethos into something modern, joyous and powerful. Playing since the '70s, the Dirty Dozen has jammed with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie to David Bowie, spawning imitators and reigniting a forgotten genre. Still, no one can match their mix of skronky sax, surprisingly soulful trombone, seriously rockin' sousaphone and tribal drums that invoke the ghosts of Tremé. In the hands of these players, the past becomes the future. $15-$18. Visulite Theatre.

Red June at the U.S. National Whitewater Center tonight (6/14/2012)

Posted By on Thu, Jun 14, 2012 at 9:08 AM

RED JUNE It's almost commonplace now for a band to throw "folk" in its description, but Red June is the real deal. The Asheville trio uses some of the best elements from a variety of American folk genres: toe-tapping breakdowns, tight gospel harmonies and lyrics full of country longing. Blending old genres with a new, sleek sensibility, Red June brings traditional Southern music into a new age. What it lacks in raw sound, it makes up in seriously talented musicianship. Free. U.S. National Whitewater Center.

Live review: Of Montreal, Neighborhood Theatre, 6/12/2012

Posted By on Wed, Jun 13, 2012 at 2:05 PM

On Tuesday night at Neighborhood Theatre, the crowd chanted for an encore. So, naturally, two men wearing pig masks, bodysuits and Shakespearean shirts started a drum battle onstage. After a referee halted the contest, the eight-member band, led by a man with a half-shaven head, bright blue eye shadow and sporting scandalously short cutoff shorts, emerged.

Only at an Of Montreal show.

It was Of Montreal's first Charlotte performance and the first stop of a North American tour for the band's recently released 11th album, Paralytic Stalks. The Athens, Ga., act releases about an album a year of its warped psychedelic pop, and the live shows reflect the group's work aesthetic - Of Montreal works hard onstage and at breakneck speed.

The set was nearly sensory overload. A projection screen depicted colorful pictures of everything from flowers to eyeballs to sloths. The band's famous live performance art made an appearance as well, with acted out vignettes depicting humanity's darker side - a shooting standoff, a wrestling match, assault on a woman, a caveman killing a man in a pig mask - as well as more esoteric scenes, including men in black body suits throwing balloons into the crowd, a giant, dancing knight and two men in checkered bodysuits lifting up a woman in a white bodysuit with petal-shaped, papier-mâché hands.

All of this madness was led by frontman Kevin Barnes - or rather, his alter ego Georgie Fruit - who strutted about the stage, often in women's clothing and in various states of undress. Barnes is an enthralling performer, light on the banter and heavy on the sexual, androgynous performance.

Girls, Guns and Glory at The Evening Muse tonight (6/13/2012)

Posted By on Wed, Jun 13, 2012 at 8:07 AM

GIRLS GUNS AND GLORY These New Englanders channel old-school honky tonk, crank their Southern rock-fueled amps and turn just about any joint or outdoor venue into a Dixie roadhouse. Singer/ guitarist Ward Hayden's hefty vocals (is there such thing as Northern drawl?) colors much of their new recording Sweet Nothings. The country and roots-rock combo is rounded out with road-tested musicians that pretty much guarantee a fine evening of soaking and dancing. $8. The Evening Muse.

Joseph Arthur at The Evening Muse tonight (6/9/2012)

Posted By on Sat, Jun 9, 2012 at 8:34 AM

JOSEPH ARTHUR In the course of his 12-year career, Joseph Arthur's had a modest hit or two, popping up on The O.C.'s soundtrack once and being covered by Coldplay. But the real gems of Arthur's oeuvre reveal themselves to those who know his catalog well. Hidden among the layers of electronically looped guitar, synth, and harmonica - all of which Arthur performs solo, with the help of many gadgets - are warm themes of human error, failure and, ultimately, redemption. $12. The Evening Muse.

Dr. John at Time Warner Cable Uptown Amphitheatre tonight (6/9/2012)

Posted By on Sat, Jun 9, 2012 at 8:16 AM

DR. JOHN Shunning boomer reverence, the Night Tripper Mac Rebennack casts a voodoo spell of leathery leering vocals, slithery funk, raunchy N'awlins R&B and Creole gumbo mojo. Chances are, Dr. John's swampy alchemical orgasm has touched you already, whether you were in the "Right Place, Wrong Time" for his sole hit in 1973; have been to Bonnaroo, which takes its name from his 1974 ode to hedonism, Desitively Bonnaroo; or (re)discovered him as a spiritual activist on Locked Down, his 2012 collaboration with The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach. Spanning genres and generations, the Big Mac swallows disparate musical styles whole and transforms them. Inexplicably opening for jam-band nonentities Gov't Mule, the good doctor is that rare living legend who can still shake your ass and fry your mind. $32/$45.35. Time Warner Cable Uptown Amphitheatre.

Posted By on Fri, Jun 8, 2012 at 12:10 PM

The Charlotte Video Project, which is working to make 100 short films about the city and its people before the Democratic National Convention in September, released a five-minute video about Charlotte hip-hop duo Brody & Choch.

The video highlights the group's old-school look and sound as it shows them on stage, in the studio and at the barber shop.

Brody & Choch will host and perform at the Fillmore House Party on June 16 featuring Lucky Five, Sean Divine and Chasing Pedestrians.
