Editor's Note: First Notes is a weekly update of recent happenings in the world of music.

* The day after the Oscars, not everyone is talking about the awards that were handed out. Catching a lot of buzz this morning is Lady Gaga's tribute to Sound of Music. There are plenty of people saying, "Who knew she could sing?!?" after that. We always knew she could sing, but her over-the-top antics usually overshadowed her voice. Maybe we should thank Tony Bennett for calming her down a bit?

* Common and John Legend also garnered some praise by performing the Oscar-winning song "Glory" from the movie Selma, bringing many people in the audience to tears.

* Jimmy Kimmel offered up a skit dedicated to the handsome men of America. While the skit was entertaining and funny, we have to say, one musician stole the show...

* Sam Smith, fresh off his four Grammy wins, will kick off a North American tour right here in Charlotte. The soul singer will perform at Time Warner Cable Arena on July 18. Tickets go on sale Friday, Feb. 27.
