Girl Talk brings the party to Charlotte tonight (1/25/11)

Posted By on Tue, Jan 25, 2011 at 12:16 PM

Gregg Gillis, aka Girl Talk, is in town tonight. If there are still tickets to his show at The Fillmore, and you're in the mood for a big party, you should get one. I'm serious.

A few years ago, Girl Talk performed at Bonnaroo. I didn't go. The next day, all I heard around the press tent area was "Did you see Girl Talk yesterday?"

Last year, I didn't make that mistake. A lot of photographers didn't. We all went to see Girl Talk and were immediately impressed by his energy, style and the crowd.

Within moments of hitting the stage, kids were jumping the barricade and getting on stage with him. While his laptops are covered in Saran Wrap to protect them from any bodily fluids, Gillis spends the night mixing songs, jumping around and dancing his ass off. So does the crowd.

If you aren't familiar with his music, check out this video:

Music for a snow day

Posted By on Mon, Jan 10, 2011 at 12:59 PM

So, most of Charlotte is at home today, staying indoors and off the roads because of the current snow storm. Made me wonder — what are some good (or bad) songs/albums for the snow?

Here's what I thought of:

- Snow Patrol

- Ozzy Osbourne's Blizzard of Ozz

- Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Snow (Hey Oh)"

- Something by that one-hit wonder, Snow (he sang "Informer")

- The Christmas anthem, "Let It Snow"

- Pheobe Snow

- Music from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs?

- Miike Snow

What else?

Amos' taking aim at Live Nation?

Posted By on Mon, Jan 3, 2011 at 11:31 AM

Amos' Southend has launched a new Website at the same old address, amossouthend.com. Aside from the visual differences, I couldn't help but notice one little change in wording. It now says, "Charlotte's Affordable Live Music Venue."

Could it be a swipe at Live Nation's Fillmore? Maybe. There's nothing that says it is, but it was the first thing that crossed my mind.

Lady Gaga exalts new release

Posted By on Tue, Nov 30, 2010 at 12:06 PM

Lady Gaga told fans at a concert on Friday that her new release, Born This Way, would be the greatest album of the decade. To that, I say, "Ease up there, Ms. Kanye..."

Sure, Kanye West often says he's the greatest of all time and lets his ego do the talking, but there are a lot of fans who are sick of his crap, too.

She is quoted as saying, "I promise you I’ll never let you down. And not for nothing, the album’s finished, and it’s fucking really good. ... I promise to give you the greatest album of this decade, just for you.” She added that the new album would be "so much deeper than a wig or lipstick or an outfit, or a fucking meat dress."

Well, let's just wait to hear it before you call it the greatest of the decade. It's great that you say you do so much for your fans, but this is also the same woman who told a Charlotte crowd that she wasn't there for the money, yet still charged $200 a ticket.

Jersey Shore girl tries to rap

Posted By on Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 3:36 PM

A clip has been released from the first song by Angelina from The Jersey Shore, a "reality" show on MTV.

It's called "I'm Hot."

angelina_song.mp3

Um... this song sucks. No other way to say it. Probably the worst thing to hit the air since, well, The Jersey Shore... or one of the songs from the Real Housewives.

'Glee' "topples" Beatles record

Posted By on Mon, Nov 8, 2010 at 5:51 PM

OK, this story came out about a month ago, but it still bothers the hell out of me. A lot of publications, etc., are making a big deal out of the fact that the television show Glee has more singles in the top 100 and broke the record set by the Beatles for most hit singles.

Here's the problem I have with it — they aren't singing their own songs. The Beatles had 71 songs by The Beatles in the charts. Glee has songs by Britney Spears and dozens of other artists. Shouldn't those artists get the credit instead of this Glee cover band? They also fall of the charts quickly — 105 weeks so far while the Beatles were on the charts for 617 weeks.

Much like cover bands, I'm not a fan of the TV show either. If people want to watch the show, that's fine, but don't put them in the same sentence as The Beatles when it comes to album sales and setting records. Until that choral group can start writing songs of their own, they aren't going to get any credit from me.

CD Review: The Foreign Exchange's Authenticity

Posted By on Fri, Oct 29, 2010 at 4:50 PM

Authenticity

The Deal: Grammy-nominated duo with North Carolina lead singer releases their third studio album.

The Good: Soulful without fitting in a nice, little, soulful box. I mean it's really, really mellow. Nicolay continues to produce tracks right in Phonte Coleman's vocal wheelhouse, not giving the rapper turned singer anything he would necessarily have to stretch for. The production also had a dope familiarity. Tracks put you instantly in the mind of pop and R&B tracks from the '80s even with the electronic touches of Nicolay's European influence.

What are the scariest music videos?

Posted By on Fri, Oct 29, 2010 at 2:13 PM

Since Halloween is this weekend, I thought I'd ask — what do you think is the scariest music video?

I remember when Michael Jackson's was a bit scary and creepy... so is it "Thriller"?

\\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</embed\>\</object\>

Marilyn Manson's "Sweet Dreams" is still pretty damned frightening....

\\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</embed\>\</object\>

And Aphex Twin is the kind of thing that will give you nightmares.

Billboard has come up with its own list here.

What's your opinion?

Live review: The Smoker's Club Tour

Posted By on Thu, Oct 28, 2010 at 2:50 PM

The Smoker's Club Tour

Curren$y w/ Big K.R.I.T & Smoke DZA

Amos' Southend

October 27, 2010

The Deal: Charlotte gets their first glimpse of hip hop's next big thing, Big K.R.I.T, and catches a contact high from Curren$y and Smoke DZA along the way.

The Good: The crew from Black Flag Records was the local opener and Dow Jones, A. Moss and Deniro Farrar put together their most complete and fluid set I've ever seen. It's like everything is coming together for them and their road work is starting to pay off with much better sets.

Smoke DZA came out with a half smoked blunt behind his ear and got into material from his "George Kush Da Button" mixtape.

Big K.R.I.T. -- Wow! His performance was passionate, intense, high-energy and best of all, dope. He ripped through material from his hit, K.R.I.T Wuz Here, and even some newer tracks sure to be on the upcoming Return of 4eva. Fans really responded to the powerful, self-produced jams. Easily the night's best performance, seeing "Hometown Hero" and "Children of the World" live were special but seeing him spit "Country Shit" over fellow Mississippi flag waver, David Banner's "Like A Pimp" then jump in the crowd to finish the song was crazy. Big Sant joined him on stage and was instantly a crowd favorite, despite the fact he was the spitting of Little Brother's Big Pooh.

I think it's safe to say Curren$y was high as shit! Thankfully the show wasn't hurt at all. He came out on stage and went through tons of material, spitting lyrics as crisply as the records they were on. Even challenging the audience to go bar for bar with him on his verses without the music. What was funnier was his random insights ("it hot as shit up here" + urging the crowd to "maintain their high" since smoking was unheard of) or his impressions of DJ Don Cannon.

The crowd wasn't nearly as large as it was for Curren$y cohort Wiz Khalifa but the few hundred on hand were as engaged as any you'll get in Charlotte, proving it sometimes better to have a few hundred diehards rather than a thousand people just coming to be seen.

The Bad: North Carolina's indoor smoking ban didn't seem to sit well with the performers. It was constantly brought up, although I doubt blazing trees indoors was ever legal.

Don't know how many people in the audience were old enough to remember Fiend, of No Limit fame when No Limit was -- No Limit, but I'm guessing it was less than 10.

Nobody complained but the missing songs were glaring. Tracks like "No Wheaties," "Etc., Etc.," and "The Secret" featured all three performing acts but weren't part of the setlist. Slightly disappointing.

The Verdict: Solid show. The local openers outshined the openers on tour, Smoke DZA was about what you'd expect. Curren$y was awesome but K.R.I.T was special. That's the only way to describe it.

Local Leak: Dow Jones

Posted By on Tue, Oct 19, 2010 at 2:48 PM

img_5578.webp

We haven't had a Local Leak for you in a while but today we've got new music from Charlotte MC, Dow Jones.

The Black Flag Records artist and Queen City opening act staple is hard at work on his upcoming EP, Lyrics and Liquor, but dropped off these appetizer tracks for fans who haven't heard anything new from him in a while.

Gotta love local music that doesn't sound local. Enjoy.
