A sound experiment

In which we combine the print and digital experiences into one

After a couple of decades carrying a heavy burden, I'm finally ready to share a defining secret about my childhood with the world: When I was in the 5th grade, I sort of, kind of cheated on my experiment at the annual science fair.

You see, I wanted to win so badly that I reused the experiment I'd done a couple of years earlier — something with apples, I think — because I knew the results of that experiment. Sure enough, I took home the blue ribbon for first place.

That blue ribbon, wherever it may be in my parents' house now, is stained with the marked guilt of a 10-year-old girl who was too afraid to try something new.

Whew. Now that I've gotten that off my chest, let me tell you about something new that I'm not afraid to try. It's our digitally enhanced Music Issue — an edition you can actually listen to on your smartphone.

For our first foray into the world of "augmented reality" — in which the print, digital and mobile platforms come together in one experience — we've partnered with Layar (www.layar.com) to give our readers a chance to listen to the 15 songs we've chosen for our local music compilation Jeff Hahne's Homebrew without having to log onto your computer.

Here's what you do:

1. Download the Layar app on your i0S or Android device.

2. Look for the Layar graphic in our print edition, found on pages 13, 14 and 16.

3. Scan the entire page using the app.

4. Push the "Listen Now" buttons that appear on the virtual page of your phone.

5. Enjoy local music.

I'm not saying this is the future of newspapers, but it is a pretty damn cool experiment. Of course, those songs are available on our website, too.
