Comic review: Halcyon No. 1

The Deal: Big-time TV/film writer Marc Guggenheim — joined by Tara Butters and artist Ryan Bodenheim — launches the new Collider imprint at Image Comics with a superhero title that asks: "What happens to superheroes when there are no more bad guys?"

The Good: Before I start talking about this title's story or anything writing-oriented, I've got to give it up to the book's artist. I've never seen Bodenheim's work before, but this guy shows a skill for creating cinematic action sequences. His art is clean and his designs are incredibly imaginative. I'm sure we'll be seeing much more of him in the years to come. Now, when it comes to this issue's script, so far I'm enjoying the writing team's approach to dialogue and exposition. Guggenheim and Butters thankfully get out of Bodenheim's "way" and don't clutter the page with an excessive amount of word balloons or captions. The chatter among the characters is snappy — and they take some interesting liberties with translating foreign languages.

The Bad: The worst thing about this book is that the characters are a little too analogous for my tastes. I mean, Halcyon could have easily been a rejected pitch for DC Comics — because the book has a "Batman" type, a "Superman" type, a "Flash" type and so on. I've already seen this deconstruction of superhero mythology in books like The Authority or, hell, even Watchmen. Not sure I need to see it again.

The Verdict: Great art, interesting concept, but if the comic can't get past its "riff" mode, then I won't be picking it up for long.

Quick Hits

Avengers Prime No. 4: OK, this is officially my favorite Avengers title. Say what you want about writer Brian Michael Bendis, but artist Alan Davis is a god. Seriously. After all these years, this dude can do no wrong. We are truly not worthy.

B.P.R.D.: Hell on Earth — New World No. 4: I love the characters so much in B.P.R.D. that I can forgive the fact that I'm not exactly sure what is happening.
