Present at the Creation

E-mail helps spread B.S. faster

Pretty much anyone with access to email these days can take on the appearance and credibility of vast news-gathering organizations like CBS, CNN, The New York Times, or even (dare I say it) Creative Loafing. I am filing this report from the Loaf's Matthews, NC, satellite bureau via e-mail, which makes me the Charlotte equivalent of Wolf Blitzer.

Unfortunately, about 80 percent of what passes for "news" these days comes in the form of sterilized, pre-packaged "press releases" which are little more than slick infomercials pre-chewed for your consumption pleasure. Another 15 percent comes from forwarded emails from crazy relatives in New Jersey (which eventually appear as verbatim fact on Faux News and the EIB Network). The other 5 percent comes from the Daily Show on Comedy Central; sadly, this fake-news show is generally the most reliable news source Americans have.

In deference to the political process which we've come to call our Brave New Democracy, here are my two current favorite "news items the (liberal / conservative) biased media won't tell you," available only via e-mail.

1. The Lord has a way of revealing those of us who really know him, and those that don't! In an attempt to show the strength of his faith (John Kerry / George Bush) gave a big speech last week about how his faith is so "important" to him. He announced that his favorite Bible verse is John 16:3. Of course he meant John 3:16, but nobody in the (Bush/Kerry) camp was familiar enough with scripture to catch the error. And do you know what John 16:3 says? "They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me." The Spirit works in strange ways. (The Kerry version of this was on Rush Limbaugh last week). I'd love to try to make a joke at this point, but it's just too tragic that there are people out there who actually believe this kind of stuff.

2. As you probably know, deadly anthrax is made from a mold spore that starts as a normal nuisance in nature. There is a large food company (with Democratic ties) that had over a thousand acres of tomatoes contaminated with the fungus. Obviously, the tomatoes could not be used to make ketchup but rather than taking a financial loss, the company sold the contaminated crop to a "middle eastern middle man" of questionable connections. (I made this one up. Expect to see it as fact soon in an inbox near you).
