For 36 years Gailya Cherry has been coming to the Charlotte Regional Farmers Market every Friday and Saturday to sell her corn, squash, onions, and best of all, her tomatoes. People come from all over the area to buy her famous tomatoes, which she says are some of the only homegrown tomatoes that can be found during the summer. Although times have been rough lately, Cherry has not been deterred. Her consistency makes her a favorite at the Charlotte Regional Farmers Market, and if you take a trip down that way, be sure to check out her wares.
Creative Loafing: How far you drive to get here?
Gailya Cherry: Denver, N.C. Thats where the farms at. We raise horses out there. About 65 of them.
What sells best out here?
Tomatoes. Thats the most popular. We sell them $1.69 a pound. We ought to charge more than that but other people have them out here and if you charge too high, people notice. People look at prices. But weve been coming so long that people know that we have the best homegrown tomatoes in the summer, so theyll pay. They pay a $1.69 rather than pay $.99 and have them shipped from somewhere.
Looks like you have a lot of stuff here. Does the Farmers Market provide you with tables?
Well, most of the stuff were able to store since the beginning of the season. But most is our stuff. The Farmers Market only provides one table per vendor.
Um. Yuck.
The Charlotte Observer reports:
The inspection report for Maki of Japan in the food court shows food debris on utensils that were supposed to be clean, and no hand soap anywhere in the store.Inspectors also noted that eggs, chicken and beef were all stored at the wrong temperature.
Maki of Japan scored an 82.

Ciao Bella is sending out their "Gelato Mobiles" this summer to hand out free samples of their delicious gelatos, ice creams, and sorbets at retailers on the East and West coasts.
Over the next two weeks, Ciao Bella will be in Charlotte handing out samples at Harris Teeter stores. The 3.5 oz. samples come with a cute little spoon under the lid, and come in the flavors blood orange sorbet, mango sorbet, lemon sorbet, Tahitian vanilla gelato, and chocolate hazelnut gelato.
I got a couple samples when we raided the G' mobile down at a Harris Teeter in Ballantyne last week. The cups of frozen heaven were totally cute and totally indulgent (well, the creamy gelatos were, sorbets are guilt-free).
Check out the schedule below to get your free sample(s). You know where you'll find me over the next couple weeks... with roller skates on trailing behind the trucks by a rope.

Samantha Webster was born and raised in a small, Southern North Carolina town that not even the greatest writer could dream up. She spent the majority of her teenage years driving all over the Carolinas to see bands perform, subsequently earning her the nickname of Band Aide and gaining her the friendships of a gaggle of band boys. When it came time for her to pursue a college degree, her love of live music landed her in Charlotte at UNCC, where she struggled to decide between focusing on her writing or art. She finally made her mind up and is now dangerously close to obtaining her BFA in Illustration with a double minor in English and Art History.
