You would be surprised at how many SouthParkers battled the Yellow Season by having brunch outside. One favorite spot is Café Monte French Bakery & Bistro. Monte's interior captures the feel of La Belle Époque with tumbled Italian marble floor tiles and the lace café curtains. In fact, owner Monte Smith continuously tweaks the interior, so visiting is an I Spy puzzle experience.
Outside, tables are restricted to the sidewalk which also hosts palm trees in gigantic containers. We wish Café Monte would storm the side parking lot to add more patio seating on these gorgeous spring days.
Best I had toute la semaine was Café Montes brilliantly crafted Quiche Florentine, a rustic sacre du printemps classic, mais non? The appeal of this locally owned spot translates well into any language or any season.

If you read the story "3 questions with Monte Smith, restaurateur" on our site last week and wondered what the food at Cafe Monte French Bakery and Bistro in SouthPark might look like, here's a pic for you:
Having never ventured over to this Paris-getaway in South Charlotte, I stopped by to check it out for lunch. The bistro offers al fresco dining with cafe tables that look like they've been plucked from France. With jazzy, slow French music piped through their sound system, you really feel like you just might not be in Charlotte anymore. Take a gander at this beautiful BLT sandwich. Thick slices of sweet brioche toast sandwich together fresh tomato, lettuce, and country bacon, served with a side of mixed greens.

Back in college, I used to go home over the holiday breaks and come back to campus with homemade goodies for my friends. One time I returned from winter break with tiramisu.
I was never allowed free reign of the household alcohol in our liquor cabinet as I was under 21 at the time, but when it came to cooking or baking, my mom could care less. As long as I didn't straight up drink it by the glass, it was all good. Rum, Kahlua, Chambord, Bailey's ... I could use as much as I wanted. It was my loophole.
So when I made the tiramisu,
I loaded it up to the max with Kahlua. Back at school, my friends took one bite of the stuff and refused to eat the rest because it tasted way too alcoholic for tiramisu. Eight years later, they still make fun of me for my "Alcoholic Tiramisu."
Don't worry... this Tiramisu Cake is nothing like that. I followed the recipe exactly and used only two tablespoons of Kahlua for the entire cake. Two white cakes are brushed with an espresso syrup, then layered together with a fluffy coffee-flavored marscapone and whipped cream filling, studded with bittersweet chocolate, frosted with more marscapone and whipped cream, and topped with shaved chocolate.
The recipe comes from Dorie Greenspan again ... I used the recipe found in her book Baking: From My Home to Yours.
Ahhh, there's nothing like eating your way through stress.
