Photo shoot: Pradigy GT in style

Posted By on Wed, Aug 29, 2012 at 7:05 PM

Summer anthems are rampant this season and everyone's playlist has a little something from each genre.

August-01.jpg

Combining hip-hop and rock to form their unconventional, yet oh-so-pleasing-to-the-ear style, Pradigy GT is pure genius. With their uncanny ability to merge the two genres translating into their clothing of choice, they can be edgy, charismatic, smooth, rebellious, trendsetting, and never afraid to push the envelope — matter of fact, what envelope?! Pradigy GT is comprised of dope, no-treble-allowed bassist Ben, microphone fiend vocalist Reggie, Niki C, a tantalizing finger-vixen on the key-tar, beat-machine drummer Patrick, and a man wanted for assault on the guitar, Ben. Be sure to check them out on Facebook, Twitter , their website and during Charlotte Int'l Fashion Week on Friday, Sept. 14 at The Blake Hotel.

Blend Boutique brings boho-chic to Ballantyne

Posted By on Wed, Aug 22, 2012 at 12:55 PM

“Hope chests.” “Glory Boxes.” I don’t know much about them, but a quick Wikipedia search informs me that, to the unmarried young women of yesteryear, they were “used to collect items such as clothing and household linen ... in anticipation of married life.” But in my pop-culturally programmed mind, all they conjure up is that episode of Sex and the City (don’t act like you don’t know the one) where Charlotte’s friend appropriates the name of her imagined unborn child, leaving the ever romantic Charlotte to reckon with all the as of yet unrealized dreams hiding in her hope chest.

I didn’t ask entrepreneur Christy Ward if she’s ever had a hope chest, but if she did, I know at least one item I would’ve found in there: the word “Blend," written in the penmanship promises are made of. Ward opened Blend Boutique just two weeks ago, and the first-time store owner is thrilled. “It all happened really quickly, but I’ve had the name 'Blend' picked out since forever.”

Located in south Charlotte’s mixed-use Ballantyne Village shopping center, the women’s clothing, jewelry and accessories boutique carries fashion-forward brands such as Bec & Bridge, Chan Luu, Citizens of Humanity, KAIN Label, LNA, Mother Denim, MYNE, and Ramona LaRue.

The shopping experience can be a trying one. Whether you're in possession of that "shop till you drop" passion for it, or you prefer a get-in-and-get-out approach, shoving one's way through throngs of clearance-scouting consumers is few people's idea of a fun and easy time.

Photos/Video: Brief: A Fashion for Fete 2012

Posted By on Mon, Aug 13, 2012 at 1:16 PM

If you were driving by the Extravaganza Depot on North Tryon Street Saturday night, you probably heard the loud screams of exhilaration. Sorry about that. Me and my fellow attendees of Brief: A Fete for Fashion could hardly contain ourselves.

Sure, the men who sauntered 85 percent naked down the runway at this men's underwear fashion show were sexy. And yes, I might have lost my composure for a moment and salivated over the toned, ripped bodies of these gorgeous men. But hey: I was not alone. And more importantly, the event was for a good cause, raising money for Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Regional AIDS Interfaith Network.

Some quick snapshots.

Who won the Green Jeans Consignment Stylist contest?

Posted By on Fri, Aug 3, 2012 at 3:38 PM

Remember, a couple of weeks ago we told you about the Green Jeans Consignment Stylist Contest? Well, yesterday was the big day and we were there for all of the VIP fun!

Christine Nelson, Marguerite Rupar and Whitney Hamlin came out to show off their styling skills and pulled together three awesome looks in under the allotted time of one hour. The "battle" was intense, and although all of the ladies did a fantastic job, only one could be the winner.

  • Carla Jarrett

All in the name of charity, yesterday's VIP event seemed to bring out the best in everyone. In fact, Rupar mentioned that she would "donate her earrings to Dress for Success Charlotte" if she won. So who IS the winner? Announced on the Green Jeans Consignment Facebook page earlier today, Marguerite Rupar takes home the gold. Well ... it's actually a blue ribbon, but it's a first place win nonetheless. Congratulations, Marguerite!

There are so many great items available for sale from clothing to shoes, handbags and accessories, and the official sale opened to the public today at 9 a.m. You can shop the Green Jeans Consignment sale at the Queens Sports Complex (2229 Tyvola Road) until 8 p.m. this evening, Saturday 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday, (which is 50 percent off all discounted items), from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.

Style Night Out: Save the Date! 9/13/12

Posted By on Fri, Aug 3, 2012 at 10:36 AM

If you attended Fashion's Night Out last year at the Metropolitan, you know what a treat that was for Charlotte's fashion obsessed. I'm talking 26 local boutiques, salons, makeup artists, 120 models and over 1,800 guests.

Instagram shot from last years event

FNO is a global initiative created by the fashion industry's biggest influencers, CFDA and Vogue Magazine. Now in its 4th year, this event continues to create awareness for neighborhood boutiques while bringing the community together to support these businesses in the most stylish way.

I attended FNO at the Met in 2011, which was THE most popular of all FNO events held in the city, and even had an opportunity to grace the stage myself. As a pre-host of the fashion show, I was able to get a bird's eye view of everything, and let me tell you, the experience was simply electric. I had no idea just how many fashionable men and women there are in the Q.C. From boutique owners, models and stylists to local celebrities, Charlotte socialites and the trendy "gal-about-town," they all came out to play dressed in their chic-est looks.

This year, instead of celebrating FNO on Sept 6th during the undeniable chaos that is sure to takeover the city during the Democratic National Convention, Charlotte will have its very own night of style. Introducing ... the Queen City's 1st Annual "Style Night Out."

Style Night Out was created by local trendsetter and producer of FNO at the Met (2011), Effie Loukas. SNO will be the mirror image of FNO (with the exception of the date change) and will encompass the same energy as last year's celebration. But, if you know Loukas like I do, it will be even bigger and better.

For 2012, SNO will be at held Morrison Shopping Center in SouthPark on Thursday, Sept. 13, so be sure to mark your calendars. With 37 local boutiques participating and 148 models this year, it's gonna be a not-to-be-missed event!

For more event information and to find out when tickets will be available, log on to www.stylenightoutclt.com.

Styleascope: Leo

Posted By on Thu, Aug 2, 2012 at 12:48 PM

Leo (July 24- August 23)

Styleascope is a lighthearted horoscope that puts a spotlight on local fashion. Believe it or not, Zodiac signs say a lot about a person. They speak to an individual's strengths, weaknesses, romantic attractions, values, desires and ... fashion sense? Yep! The stars can serve as a personal stylist, too. No sign is alike, so your wardrobes shouldn't be either. My aim is to blend fashion and the cosmos by providing a guide to show you what's in store at local boutiques (and why your sign is telling you to wear it). Instead of the runway, I'll use the stars as my guide. So, what's your sign?

Name: Julie Unkiewicz
Birthday: Aug. 18
Age: 22
Do you read your horoscope? “Although I’m not a firm believer, I find myself checking my horoscope daily via twitter and magazines at the check out line. It’s such a thrill to stumble upon a 'reading' that sounds all too familiar. I also love the advice they give!”

styla.jpg

Like a leader of the pack, the lion is courageous, driven and bold. Leos feel best when they’re in charge, and they’re notorious for using their power to make risky fashion choices. A Leo will often wear something that no other sign would dare to think about. It’s no wonder then, that Leos are inevitably drawn to animal prints. As a fire sign, Leos suit warm colors like hues of orange, yellow and gold best. The more sophisticated and seductive, the better. You’ll always find a Leo wearing sleek statement pieces as well as lots of gold jewelry. Leos get their burning sense of energy, individuality and creativity from their ruling planet, the sun. As the center of the universe, the Leo craves to be in the spotlight. Some say this is this perfect breeding ground for egotism, yet most Leo’s just possess a natural air of magnetism that simply causes others to gravitate towards them. Whether it’s through fashion or otherwise, the Leo exudes warmth, confidence and sophistication in any situation.

All items found at Fresh, 813 Providence Road.

Heather Hawkins ostrich leg bangle: $99
Sylvia Benson necklace: $144
Heather Hawkins bag: $248
