Well, the new GOP regime in Virginia isn’t wasting any time making a name for itself. If it’s not the new governor deciding to revive Confederate History Month (without that pesky slavery thing, of course), then it’s state Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli censoring the Virginia state seal.
Cuccinelli ordered lapel pins for his staff, but he insisted that the breast of the Roman goddess Virtus, which is front and center on the state seal, be covered up. Siiigh. Let’s cut to the chase here: This is the action of an unsophisticated, repressed Puritan who’s apparently uncomfortable with classical art (unlike the 200 years’ worth of former Virginia Attorneys General) — in other words, a backward rube.
Cuccinelli’s actions bring back fond memories of Bush AG John Ashcroft, who was widely ridiculed for spending $8000 for blue drapes to cover two nude statues of Justice at the, um, U.S. Justice Department. Cuccinelli has now announced he’ll no long be using the un-breastified lapel pins. There’s no confirmation yet of the rumor that the AG has ordered new pins, depicting the goddess in a burqa.
