UNC to vote on yet another tuition rate hike in February

Posted By on Fri, Jan 13, 2012 at 10:37 AM

The Observer is reporting that the University of North Carolina president, Tom Ross, is recommending a "fee hike of less than 10 percent" ... that's how the headline reads. Reading past the headline, one realizes that's on top of a nearly — aren't semantics fun?! — 10 percent tuition increase from last year:

Ross will offer the UNC Board of Governors specific recommendations in the next few weeks. But he said he hoped his plan would represent an average systemwide increase below the 9.3 percent hike enacted last year.

...

UNC campuses have proposed undergraduate tuition and fee increases ranging from 4.3 percent at UNC-Pembroke to 13.5 percent at UNC-Asheville. The proposed undergraduate tuition and fee increases are 11.4 percent at UNC-Chapel Hill, 10.4 percent at N.C. State University and 8.5 percent at N.C. Central University.

Add in school loan interest rates and "barely less than" just comes across as ridiculous, especially given the economy and it's friend the shittastic job market.

To all of this I say, it's no wonder people are running around in the streets bitching about their school loans. Or, as Rush Limbaugh might say, bend over and grab your ankles, students, because you're about to get fucked.

Weekender, Jan. 13-15

Posted By on Thu, Jan 12, 2012 at 5:07 PM

Check out these events going down in Charlotte and the surrounding area this weekend— as selected by the folks at Creative Loafing.

Friday, Jan. 13
Cash Crop
The Harvey B. Gantt Center
After saying bye-bye to its three Romare Bearden exhibits last weekend, The Harvey B. Gantt Center unveils Cash Crop, an intense new exhibit comprised of 15 slavery-inspired sculptures by artist Stephen Hayes (See photo — doesn’t that just make your chest ache?). Two more exhibits, Contemporary African Photography: Malick Sidibé & Zwelethu Mthetwa and Rhythm-A-Ning: James Phillips, Charles Searles & Frank Smith open along side of it, adding African photography and abstract paintings to the mix.

Theater High tides are at stake in Carolina Actors Studio Theatre's splashy new stage stimulator, Jack Goes Boating. In the play, four New Yorker's — all of which, haven't been successful in the love department — cross paths in their quest to survive. Hobbies including cooking classes, illegal drug use and swimming lessons have kept them preoccupied, but only closer to the edge of drowning in their own sorrows. Sounds like life jackets are in order, right? More...

Comedy You don’t have to rent a movie to spend Friday night with DC Curry. The comedian, who has starred on BET’s Comic View and in films Next Friday and Friday After Next, performs live at The Comedy Zone tonight. More...

Saturday, Jan. 14
His Girl Friday
ImagineOn's Wells Fargo Playhouse
The Main Library's Extra! Extra!: Celebrating the Newspaper Picture film series continues this week with a screening of 1940's His Girl Friday. The comedy stars Cary Grant as an editor who wants to break more than just the news. After hearing of his reporter ex-wife's (Rosalind Russell) decision to settle down with an insurance man (Ralph Bellamy), he devises a plan to end the unadventurous relationship by sending her to sniff out a big story.

S.C.'s dirty politics and the infamous Lee Atwater

Posted By on Thu, Jan 12, 2012 at 4:56 PM

Now that the GOP presidential primary campaign has moved to South Carolina, the mainstream media is full of stories about our ugly-sister state’s history of, shall we say, rough-edged politics. No? OK, how about we say “filthy, no-holds-barred-whatsoever, beyond-mud-slinging, completely amoral, lyin’-ass, cruel” politics? Yeah, that’s more like it.

What is motherhood worth? Apparently $50,000.

  • What is motherhood worth? Apparently $50,000.

A North Carolina task force has proposed that people who were "forcibly sterilized" by the state between 1929 and 1974 should receive $50,000 in compensation. According to the Associated Press story below, those sterilized included "epileptics and others considered mentally defective ... many were poor, black women deemed unfit to be parents," some were rape victims and others were as young as 10 years old.

UPDATE: Fun police want to stop entertainment after midnight

Posted By on Thu, Jan 12, 2012 at 1:11 PM

no-fun.jpg

UPDATE: This post contains updated information in regards to the Jan. 17 meeting.

Charlotte's fun police are at it again. The City Council was expected to vote next week on a new proposal that would put a stop to entertainment of all kinds after midnight inside bars and restaurants within 400 feet of a residential area. While information was released suggesting a vote on the proposal would take place at the Jan. 17 meeting, the item has been tabled until early spring of 2012, after the council has had a chance to revisit the noise ordinance. There would also need to be a public hearing before any vote could take place.

For establishments in areas such as Elizabeth (Kennedy's, Philospher's Stone, etc.), Plaza Midwood (Snug Harbor, Common Market, etc.) and anywhere outside of uptown, this would mean no live or recorded music, no karaoke, no comedians, no playing pool or other entertainment-related activities after midnight. (In other words, it would affect some of the city's better music clubs in some of its more artistically adventurous neighborhoods. Uptown establishments would not be affected.) Does anyone else hear the Footloose theme song in their head?

As it stands now, restaurants are defined as establishments that serve food while any place that has social entertainment is called a nightclub. Restaurants that offer various forms of social entertainment can undergo code enforcement due to the current Charlotte laws; and nightclubs are not allowed within 400 feet of residentially zoned areas. The committee is looking at the current laws and any possible changes that should be suggested to the city council.

Ed's Tavern posted comments and information online that are making rounds on Facebook and other social networking sites.

We're dedicating a little Iggy and the Stooges to the city's Fun Police. Enjoy — then scroll down below the video to find the right local representative to write and tell how you feel about the proposal. Stay tuned — we will let you know when the council decides to discuss and/or vote on the proposal.

N.C. Attorney General: Thumbs down to Duke Energy rate hike

Posted By on Wed, Jan 11, 2012 at 5:44 PM

Besides Duke Energy, who is in favor of an energy bill rate hike? Nobody, it seems.

From the News & Observer:

Attorney General Roy Cooper's office filed a legal brief Monday with the N.C. Utilities Commission detailing his opposition to the rate increase averaging more than 7 percent. Cooper says the higher power cost would be too much for Duke's 1.8 million customers in the state.

Fight marriage discrimination amendment at free photo shoot

Posted By on Wed, Jan 11, 2012 at 12:49 PM

A variety of groups that want North Carolinians to reject the Marriage Discrimination amendment in the May 2012 election are getting organized. One group, the Vote Against Project, is giving everyone who’s against the amendment a good way to take a public stand. The Vote Against Project makes its way to Charlotte on Feb. 3.

Raleigh photographer Curtis Brown organized Vote Against after becoming incensed by the harm the anti-marriage amendment's ill-conceived blast of bias would cause many couples and families in North Carolina. Brown and a crew of volunteers have kicked off a tour of the state, hoping to put together a portrait of North Carolinians who stand unified in opposition to discrimination. They are conducting free photo shoots of amendment foes, all of whom will wear shirts (provided by the group) that read “Vote Against.” The images will be posted online and no doubt shared on websites of other progressive groups and individuals. Participants are urged to share their images with everyone they know.

The time and place of the Vote Against stop in Charlotte has not been announced, but will be soon. So make plans now: Just show up, slip on the shirt, have your free picture taken, and — voila — instant activism. Strike a pose and strike a blow against mud-stupid, fearful prejudice.

Keep track of the project here, and check the CL news blog, where we’ll be posting the Charlotte location and time when we find out. Meanwhile, here’s a video explaining the whole thing:
