Arts Dancing and all that jazz at the Gantt Center

This weekend, The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture is stepping things up on Saturday (March 10, 12:30 p.m.-1:45 p.m) for its special event, Lovin' Lindy - The History of Lindy Hop & Dance Lesson. The program sheds light on the swingin’ history of the dance movement and offers folks the chance to watch dance demos and try their own footwork in an East Coast Swing dance lesson (no experience or partner necessary).
Then on Sunday (March 11, 2 p.m.), as part of The Classic International Black Cinema Series, A Man Called Adam will be screened. The 1966 film stars Sammy Davis Jr. as a famous jazz artist coping with two heavy dilemmas: guilt from a traffic accident that killed his family and prejudices from within the music industry. Louis Armstrong, Ossie Davis, Cicely Tyson, Frank Sinatra, Jr. and Mel Torme also co-star.
Both events are free with museum admission ($5-$8; Free for members and children 5 years old and under). RSVP is required for the Lovin' Lindy event, as seating is limited. The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture, 551 S. Tryon St. 704-547-3700. www.ganttcenter.org.
