Jeanne Jolly playing Double Door Inn tonight (4/25/13)

Posted By on Thu, Apr 25, 2013 at 8:32 AM

Jeanne Jolly

This Raleigh singer/songwriter's road to country music has been anything but the traditional route. Trained in classical vocal performance - she earned a masters in it from the New England Conservatory of Music - Jolly then did a stint as pop jazz trumpeter Chris Botti's featured vocalist. But Jolly grew up on the music of Loretta Lynn, the Judds and Tammy Wynette, and has returned to it with her debut, Angels. (Even her LP doesn't come from where you'd expect; Angels is out on the label +FE, run by the R&B duo of Phonte Coleman and Nicolay Rook, aka, the Foreign Exchange, with whom Jolly sings.) Jolly puts all those influences together to great effect here. One track sounds like Sade accompanied by shuffling beats and pedal steel twang; another like she's out to embarrass all the pop-country poseurs on CMT. She can even cover that beautiful voice in grit and go all Lone Justice/Maria McKee for a guitar-fueled tearjerker, and there's even a waltz where that opera training kicks in and knocks your socks off. This is a promising start for a talented singer and songwriter. $10-$12. April 25, 9 p.m. Double Door Inn, 1218 Charlottetowne Road. 704-376-1446.

Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band playing Time Warner Cable Arena tonight (4/25/13)

Posted By on Thu, Apr 25, 2013 at 8:24 AM

Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band

A storyteller for the American heartland, urbanites on the coasts and all in between, Bob Seger's songs became a part of the soundtracks of myriad young hearts of the '70s and '80s. At that time, this scribe remained grounded by spinning Seger's everyman tales in between bouts of punk rock. That's Seger's writing prowess and charm; his straight-up, no bullshit rock and introspective ballads will stand the changing tastes of time without fading. The gruff voice is gruffer, not as able to reach the highs, but his songs remain relevant and warm while the classic guitar, sax and piano sound as good on digitized boomboxes as it did in the old vinyl days. Seger and crew are on the "Rock & Roll Never Forgets" tour. Indeed. With Temperance League. $65-$85. April 25, 7:30 p.m. Time Warner Cable Arena, 333 E. Trade St. 704-688-9000.

Theater review: Pinkalicious the Musical

Posted By on Wed, Apr 24, 2013 at 5:06 PM

Her dress, her room, her dreams, and her very soul are all pink. And after one too many pink cupcakes - or maybe five - and an attack of that rare disease, pinkititus, she's altogether pink from hair to toe. But in Pinkalicious the Musical, now at ImaginOn through May 5, our hearty heroine regards her affliction as Pinkatopia and only starts to lean toward moderation when her condition tips toward red.

As we come to learn, Pinkalicious Pinkerton's pink mania is embedded in her genes. Relatively speaking, her father, mother, and brother are closet pinkaholics, but they all band together in Pinkalicious' time of trial to take the radical cure prescribed for her by Dr. Wink: a totally green diet. Out with the food coloring and in with the brussels sprouts!

True to the tribulations of childhood, the medicine is worse than the disease. But lest you think this Children's Theatre of Charlotte production is all about juvenile comedy. This is a surprisingly satisfying musical directed and choreographed by Ron Chisholm. If you're not initiated in the Pinkalicious phenomenon, you'll at least be in for a unique theater experience. McColl Family Theatre was filled to the rafters with little pink princesses who adore the original book by Victoria and Elizabeth Kann. The run of Pinkalicious was extended over a week ago due to ticket demand, so expect the same effervescent ambiance if you can snag tickets.

Don't fear The Nipple

Posted By on Wed, Apr 24, 2013 at 4:21 PM

If you thought you'd heard the last about nipples in Asheville, you're wrong. State Rep. Tim Moffitt, R-Buncombe, says he hasn't given up on making it a by-God-felony for women to expose their nipples in North Carolina. Moffitt introduced a bill that would have done just that earlier this year, but support for the bill sagged after the general tit-for-tat debates in the House. Moffitt decided that since enthusiasm for the bill had been sucked dry, he withdrew the proposed law before voting on it began, thus enabling him to reintroduce it later. The areolaphobic public servant told the Asheville Citizen-Times that he plans to revive the bill, in mid-May.

Live review: Andrew McMahon, Visulite Theatre (4/16/2013)

Andrew McMahon
Visulite Theatre
April 16, 2013

jacksmannequin.jpeg

From the moment he walked on stage and sat down at his beat up brown piano, Andrew McMahon had the audience of suburban white girls and their boyfriends in the palm of his hand.

If those at the sold-out show went wild from the opening song "As You Sleep," it went batshit crazy when McMahon jumped on top of his piano before launching into "Mixed Tape," a fan favorite from his former band Jack's Mannequin. McMahon isn't known for making overly energetic music, but no one told the crowd that as they surged forward as he played "Holiday From Real," an up-tempo, feel-good song which caters to the kind of people who used to watch The OC.

Pianos tend to bring classical music and staid concert halls to mind, but McMahon channels a little Jerry Lee Lewis when he plays, refusing to sit still and pounding on the keys like they owe him money. It's apparent that performing brings out the beast in McMahon, and he repeatedly lost himself in whatever he was playing. The same can't be said for his band, though. Competent musicians all, they did little more than stand there, playing what they were supposed to and not much else. They reminded me of one of those creepy animatronic bands which used to play at birthdays at Chuck E. Cheese, fixed in their positions and playing what they're programmed to play.

Marti Jones & Don Dixon playing Evening Muse tonight (4/24/13)

Posted By on Wed, Apr 24, 2013 at 8:05 AM

Marti Jones & Don Dixon

In the early '80s, with video killing the radio star and MTV ascendant, Marti Jones and Don Dixon were already on the ground floor. After leading N.C. garage pop heroes Arrogance throughout the '70s, Dixon jump-started the '80s jangle-pop movement when he co-produced REM's calling card Murmur. Jones debuted in the New Wave hotbed of Akron, Ohio, fronting power poppers Color Me Gone. In 1985, Dixon and Jones teamed up, first as producer and performer, then as husband and wife. They've recorded and played together ever since, supplementing their pre-psych, '60s-influenced jangle with country, tin pan alley and Southern soul. Once touted as the hipper successor to Linda Ronstadt, Jones now uses her bright but world-weary alto to go as soulful as Dusty Springfield or as gutsy as Bonnie Raitt. As for Dixon, his impeccable taste and way with a tune is legendary. Realizing that they had been playing as a duo for 27 years while recording precious few duets, Jones and Dixon rectified the matter with the 2011 LP Living Stereo. The material on that release is on par with rest of Jones and Dixon's repertoire - warm and familiar songs that sound like forgotten hits of the last 35 years. $15. April 24, 8 p.m. The Evening Muse, 3227 N. Davidson St. 704-376-3737.
