Her dress, her room, her dreams, and her very soul are all pink. And after one too many pink cupcakes - or maybe five - and an attack of that rare disease, pinkititus, she's altogether pink from hair to toe. But in Pinkalicious the Musical, now at ImaginOn through May 5, our hearty heroine regards her affliction as Pinkatopia and only starts to lean toward moderation when her condition tips toward red.
As we come to learn, Pinkalicious Pinkerton's pink mania is embedded in her genes. Relatively speaking, her father, mother, and brother are closet pinkaholics, but they all band together in Pinkalicious' time of trial to take the radical cure prescribed for her by Dr. Wink: a totally green diet. Out with the food coloring and in with the brussels sprouts!
True to the tribulations of childhood, the medicine is worse than the disease. But lest you think this Children's Theatre of Charlotte production is all about juvenile comedy. This is a surprisingly satisfying musical directed and choreographed by Ron Chisholm. If you're not initiated in the Pinkalicious phenomenon, you'll at least be in for a unique theater experience. McColl Family Theatre was filled to the rafters with little pink princesses who adore the original book by Victoria and Elizabeth Kann. The run of Pinkalicious was extended over a week ago due to ticket demand, so expect the same effervescent ambiance if you can snag tickets.
If you thought you'd heard the last about nipples in Asheville, you're wrong. State Rep. Tim Moffitt, R-Buncombe, says he hasn't given up on making it a by-God-felony for women to expose their nipples in North Carolina. Moffitt introduced a bill that would have done just that earlier this year, but support for the bill sagged after the general tit-for-tat debates in the House. Moffitt decided that since enthusiasm for the bill had been sucked dry, he withdrew the proposed law before voting on it began, thus enabling him to reintroduce it later. The areolaphobic public servant told the Asheville Citizen-Times that he plans to revive the bill, in mid-May.
Andrew McMahon
Visulite Theatre
April 16, 2013
If those at the sold-out show went wild from the opening song "As You Sleep," it went batshit crazy when McMahon jumped on top of his piano before launching into "Mixed Tape," a fan favorite from his former band Jack's Mannequin. McMahon isn't known for making overly energetic music, but no one told the crowd that as they surged forward as he played "Holiday From Real," an up-tempo, feel-good song which caters to the kind of people who used to watch The OC.
Pianos tend to bring classical music and staid concert halls to mind, but McMahon channels a little Jerry Lee Lewis when he plays, refusing to sit still and pounding on the keys like they owe him money. It's apparent that performing brings out the beast in McMahon, and he repeatedly lost himself in whatever he was playing. The same can't be said for his band, though. Competent musicians all, they did little more than stand there, playing what they were supposed to and not much else. They reminded me of one of those creepy animatronic bands which used to play at birthdays at Chuck E. Cheese, fixed in their positions and playing what they're programmed to play.
