Two Gallants at Visulite Theatre tonight (6/19/13)

Posted By on Wed, Jun 19, 2013 at 8:27 AM

TWO GALLANTS
An unlikely duo, San Francisco natives Adam Stephens and Tyson Vogel have been making music independently since 1993. Though the two have been long-time friends, it wasn't until 2004 that they began collaborating on folk/rock project, Two Gallants. After a few label changes and time spent refining their blend of aggressive indie rock and folk, Two Gallants have returned from a five-year hiatus, with the same energy and eclectic rock sound they had circa 2007. Though the two man-band draws from a variety of instruments, including harmonica, guitar and banjo, it is the strangely pleasing sound of the vocal harmony that distinguishes Two Gallants. Returning to U.S. stages for the first time in more than half a decade, Two Gallants bears an unmistakable fierceness on their latest album, The Bloom and the Blight. Combining their Western spirit, with heavy raw-rock instrumentals and a post-modern style, Two Gallants have separated themselves from the slew of Mumford and Sons-esque projects that seem to dominate the genre. $14-$17. June 19, 8 p.m. Visulite Theatre, 1615 Elizabeth Ave. 704-358-9200.

McCrory has gall to praise former moderate GOP governor

Posted By on Tue, Jun 18, 2013 at 3:55 PM

Gov. Pat McCrory has a lot of nerve praising former N.C. Gov. Jim Holshouser, who died Monday at age 78.

Holshouser came into office on Richard Nixon's coattails in 1972, becoming the first GOP governor in North Carolina since Reconstruction. He quickly gained a reputation as a governor who worked well with the legislature, a genuine moderate - you know, like McCrory was supposed to be - who enthusiastically supported several programs that today's version of the GOP would condemn as "socialism" or worse.

Holshouser served as governor from 1973 to 1977

David Byrne & St. Vincent at Belk Theater tonight (6/18/13)

Posted By on Tue, Jun 18, 2013 at 8:15 AM

DAVID BYRNE & ST. VINCENT
In the years since the dissolution of the Talking Heads, David Byrne has been a prolific collaborator, cashing in on his well-deserved respect by pairing up with the likes of everyone from Brian Eno to Sharon Jones to Fatboy Slim. His 2012 release with St. Vincent, Love This Giant, was one of his best collaborations to date. Borrowing bombastic, rhythm-driven horns from hip-hop, the duo crafted a lively record, full of Byrne's signature bizarro-pop. And, as is his fashion, Byrne made sure there was a thrilling live show to take on the road. Expect a stage jam-packed with musicians, stepping in time as they, say, toot a French horn. You're not liable to see many shows like this in your lifetime. $29.50-$84.50. June 18, 7:30 p.m. Belk Theater, 130 N. Tryon St. 704-372-1000.

Lucius at Stage Door Theater tonight (6/17/13)

Posted By on Mon, Jun 17, 2013 at 8:06 AM

Lucius
Lauded by Rolling Stone, NPR and economist Paul Krugman (?!), tandem vocalists Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Brooklyn based indie pop quintet Lucius have been painted as hipster successors to the Shirelles. But Lucius offers far more than a retro '60s souffle of perky smirky girl-group pop. Certainly Wolfe and Laessig channel the hooky hand-clapping energy of the Ronettes on their recent, titular EP. Yet Lucius' compositions also execute sharp left turns toward the alt country of Emmylou Harris and the jazzy sophisticated pop of Feist. Charismatic front-women, Wolfe and Laessig rarely harmonize like vocal duos the Secret Sisters or the Watson Twins. Instead, they seamlessly merge their voices into one shared, sublime frequency. Underpinned with clattery, clip-clopping percussion and playful brio, the primarily acoustic combo makes a powerful racket. Yet, Lucius keeps a foot in heartfelt Americana as well as rocking pop. In an early incarnation sans sideman, Wolfe and Laessig performed a dazzling, high lonesome rendition of "Shenandoah". They remain grounded in the soulfulness of Patsy Cline while exploring the quirky, nonchalant sincerity of The Roches. $10. June 17, 7:30 p.m. Stage Door Theater, 130 North Tryon St. 704- 372-1000.

Checking in from Bonnaroo 2013

Posted By on Sun, Jun 16, 2013 at 9:14 AM

(Updated on Sunday morning.) Roughly 90,000 people have descended on the farmlands of Manchester, Tenn., for the 12th annual Bonnaroo Art & Music Festival. Along with the numerous bands comes lots of sweat and a lack of sleep. Oh, and you can almost smell the porta-johns in the air, can't you? Having been here five times before, I can easily say, "This ain't my first 'Roo-deo."

Being at Bonnaroo is a trade-off. You say goodbye to indoor plumbing and anything resembling a good night's rest in exchange for so much good music you don't even know where to begin.

On the music end of things, I'll be putting together an overall wrap-up when I get back to Charlotte - and get some sleep. For now, here's some random tidbits from "the farm." (This post will be updated daily - and in the meantime you can follow me on Twitter.)

Thursday

* Yesterday's bottled water consumption count totaled seven. Yes, seven. Stay hydrated, folks. People are already passing out on a regular basis.

* Just as the heat of the day started to get firey, I passed two guys slowly walking down the dirt road between stages. As the two early-20-somethings held on to large waffle cones filled with dripping ice cream, one looked at the other and said, "Seriously, this is the best idea we've had all day ..."
