Alt-J at the Fillmore tonight (9/20/2013)

Posted By on Fri, Sep 20, 2013 at 8:37 AM

ALT-J
By all rights, English indie rockers Alt-J should suck. The band's name, derived from the hot-key combo that pulls up a delta symbol on a Mac, smacks of nerdy pretension. Song lyrics bounce off artsy touchstones like Luc Besson's Léon: The Professional and Hubert Selby's Last Exit to Brooklyn, suggesting the insular musings of film and literature snobs. Singer Joe Newman's nasal, highly dramatic vocals recall the funny voices employed by comedian Peter Sellers on Britain's beloved Goon Show. Add to all of this the dreaded curse of Britain's Mercury Prize: Legend has it that music newcomers who nab this accolade subsequently drop off the map. Guess who grabbed the trophy last year? Despite these four strikes (and counting), Alt-J handily gets to home plate. Its 2012 debut LP, An Awesome Wave, a mishmash of alt-rock histrionics, medieval harmonies, Jah Wobble-style dub bass and the weirdly sung, unsettling folk of forgotten '70s Brit oddballs Comus, is simply awesome. Those arty lyrics are just oblique enough to be evocative, and Alt-J's seamless prog-rocker fusion of disparate elements is addictively crunchy and creepy. Indeed, Alt-J's counterintuitive accessibility pisses off the Pitchfork crowd. All the more reason to love them. With Lord Huron. $25. Sept. 20, 8 p.m. The Fillmore, 1000 N.C. Music Factory Blvd. 704-916-8970.

First Drip (9/19/13): Wells Fargo layoffs, free speech on Facebook, more

Posted By on Thu, Sep 19, 2013 at 9:30 AM

Wells Fargo announced yesterday it's planning to lay off 150 mortgage-loan processors in Charlotte. Folks were given a 60-day notice yesterday.

"You aren't dreaming. And you aren't starring in 'Groundhog Day II,'" writes CNN's Leigh Ann Caldwell. There are talks of a government shutdown - again.

One of you lucky South Carolinians want to lend us - or the government, perhaps? - some money? The winning Powerball ticket was sold at a Lexington, S.C., gas station.

Liking a status or photo on Facebook is now more than just giving a thumbs up. A U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond says clicking "Like" is free speech.

And the 40 Days of Dating blog, involving a social experiment with two graphic designers dating for 40 days, will be turned into a movie, thanks to Warner Bros.

Man Man at the Chop Shop tonight (9/19/2013)

Posted By on Thu, Sep 19, 2013 at 8:34 AM

MAN MAN
Man Man, perhaps, is for a particular kind of fan - namely one who likes skronky tunes that sound like they could have been written by a slightly less bizarre Frank Zappa after a trip to the circus with Dweezil and Moon Unit. The Philadelphia experimentalists are a punky, goofy hoot. Their latest release, On Oni Pond, probably isn't the weird-meisters' favorite in the band's catalog, as it finds them mellowing and, yes, becoming somewhat more accessible to your average listener. But their performances in support of Oni Pond offer an opportunity for the ol' rock fan to dip a toe into the avant garde without getting steamrolled by meshuggah antics. Perhaps one of Man Man's best selling points is how much fun the members seem to be having onstage - check 'em out on YouTube playing "Black Mission Goggles" live at Amoeba Records in white skivvies, mouths stuffed with brightly colored toy horns - and the energy is infectious. Their shows are object lessons in how to make original art without taking yourself too seriously. With Sylvan Esso, Hectorina. $14-$16. Sept. 19, 8:30 p.m. Chop Shop, 399 E. 35th St. 704-765-2467.

Queens of the Stone Age at Uptown Amphitheatre tonight (9/19/2013)

Posted By on Thu, Sep 19, 2013 at 8:29 AM

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE
A myriad of musical souls (Dave Grohl, Billy Gibbons, Mark Lanegan, Trent Reznor, Elton John!) have passed through the Queens of the Stone Age universe, but make no mistake, it is guitarist/frontman Josh Homme who's the center of gravity and the wizard behind the wand. Clearly Homme is a Renaissance man, and his production chops, songwriting, guitar manipulations, forays into intriguing side projects and experimentation bode well for the world of rock. Finding the spaces between the crunch and subtle harmonies, Homme and crew continue to stretch parameters and dive into the void to stir things up a bit, rear their heads and have at it again. They are one of the few bands that can meld punk and psychedelic ethos while plowing through some damn good, heavy rock. They've pretty much shed the confines of stoner and desert rock labels earlier stitched to the QOTSA moniker, especially with the latest recording, the tense and expansive ... Like Clockwork. With Guards. $25-$49.50. Sept. 19, 8 p.m. Uptown Amphitheatre, 1000 N.C. Music Factory Blvd. 704-916-8970.

The Pull List (9/18/13): Debuts amid chaos

Posted By on Wed, Sep 18, 2013 at 1:00 PM

Amid the chaos of Villains Month, Infinity and Battle of the Atom, a few series from Dark Horse and Image debut this week.

Buzzkill.jpg

Back in July, Comic Afterthoughts mentioned Buzzkill, a new series from Donny Cates and Toadies drummer Mark Reznicek. A superhero's alcoholism fuels his powers, but quite predictably, problems arise from the combination. His attempt to quit creates even more trouble. The comic features art by Geoff Shaw.

Zero #1, from Image Comics, continues the company's reign over the nonsuperhero market. The spy/sci-fi tale concerns an agent named Edward Zero, who pursues a stolen object implanted inside a terrorist. Scribe Ales Kot's recent Suicide Squad run showed promise, and this series is certainly worth a shot on those issues alone.

Dark Horse's Kiss Me Satan #1 is part of Dark Horse's new horror line, combining the elements of monster movies and crime tales. With werewolf mafias and witches, the story is the kind that makes you wonder why this kind of mash-up doesn't happen more often. Victor Gischler and Juan Ferreyra are the team responsible for the miniseries.

Now, let's check out what else comes out this week.
