Theater review: Footloose

Posted By on Fri, Sep 12, 2014 at 4:54 PM

When Footloose came out of Hollywood in 1984, there were a few things in the film to explain why it remained a marketable brand long enough for the original screenwriter, Dean Pitchford, to adapt it for the Broadway stage in 1998. Most important were the hits, “Let’s Hear It for the Boy” and the title tune composed and performed by Kenny Loggins. But the raffish bad boy charisma of Kevin Bacon as Ren McCormack also lingered in the memory.

Footloose.jpg

Ren is exiled from Chicago to a hick town named Bomont, “somewhere in the heartland of America in the recent past,” where an eloquent preacher who lost his son in a car accident has prevailed upon the town council to outlaw dancing. Were it not for the musical elements in the film, we’d think we had been tossed back into the late '50s or early '60s, for the teens here have that special blandness we associate with the Beach Party onscreen romps and the equally formulaic Bye Bye Birdie on Broadway.

The lowlife edginess of Brando has been cleansed from Ren’s rebel DNA, and there’s no evidence that the sex, drugs, and long-haired incursions of Eastern cultures during the '60s ever happened — in Chicago or in Bomont. We’re really in that in-between Neverland that Grease and American Graffiti took us to, so it’s fitting that Theatre Charlotte drops the “recent past” pretense in their playbill for their current revival, ably directed by Michelle Long.

CMPD officer arrested on misdemeanor assault charges

Posted By on Fri, Sep 12, 2014 at 4:20 PM

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have arrested officer Jason Van Aken and charged him with assault inflicting serious injury and simple assault, both of which are misdemeanors.

The charges stem from a criminal investigation into an incident in which Van Aken used excessive force on Terance G. Malachi, who was in custody for carrying a concealed weapon.

On Aug. 14, the victim was in handcuffs and leg shackles in CMPD's Metro Division interview room when Van Aken allegedly pushed the victim into the wall. Malachi was transported to the hospital and diagnosed with a broken collarbone.

Van Aken has been placed on administrative leave and has had his gun and badge removed while internal investigations continue, including into whether Van Aken is responsible for other incidents involving excessive force.

First Drip (9/12/14): City postpones discussion on Uber and Lyft, Cannon to be sentenced in October, more

Posted By on Fri, Sep 12, 2014 at 8:48 AM

City Council has postponed a conversation and possible ordinance changes that would affect ride-share programs, such as Uber and Lyft, until the General Assembly potentially decides on statewide regulations. Charlotte wants driver to go through city background checks, though the companies argue they implement their own background checks. A potential ordinance would also deregulate cab fare, which is set by the city, to allow for competition.

Former Mayor Patrick Cannon will be sentenced on Oct. 14, not the original date of late September, because a defense witness will be out of town. Cannon faces 20 years in prison.

South African Olympian Oscar Pistorius has been convicted of culpable homicide in the death of his girlfriend and could still face prison time. Pistorius was found not guilty of murder in the incident in which the judge agreed he mistook his girlfriend for an intruder. But he was charged for the incident in which he fired four shots into a bathroom his girlfriend had locked herself in on Valentine's Day last year.

In technology news, you'll have to wait at least a month to order an iPhone 6, and Yahoo says it feels "threatened" by the U.S. government.
