First Drip (6/12/15): Ritz-Carlton to face lawsuit over CIAA fee

Posted By on Fri, Jun 12, 2015 at 10:45 AM

The North Carolina attorney general's office announced yesterday they will be filing a lawsuit against the Ritz-Carlton seeking financial compensation for customers who were charged a "convenience fee" during the CIAA tournament in February. During the tournament, Ritz-Carlton guests were charged a 15 percent surcharge to bar and restaurant orders that was listed as "CIAA Svc. Chg." on receipts, and some took to social media with complaints, which led to media coverage.

A water main break on Church Street has shut down 101 Independence Center and a portion of the street
for the entire day while crews work to get it fixed. The road buckled on Church Street between Trade and Fifth streets due to the 12-inch drinking water pipe breaking.

CMPD has charged 24-year-old Joshua Brownlee with murder in the case of a double murder in northeast Charlotte on Tuesday night. Police also said they have identified and interviewed a second person of interest in the shooting deaths of Matthew Brown and Mykeijaa Tucker, but have not made any other arrests yet.

Local lawmakers say a proposed law in the N.C. Senate that would shift taxpayer money from urban areas to rural areas could cost Mecklenburg County $12 million a year and the city of Charlotte $5 million annually. The proposal is part of a broader rewrite of a House economic development bill. In the latest version of the proposal, the state would distribute 20 percent of revenues based on where sales occur and 80 percent based on a county's population. Gov. Pat McCrory called the proposal "class warfare."

A teenager survived a shark attack at Ocean Isle Beach in southeast North Carolina on Thursday afternoon, the town's mayor said. The girl reportedly had three to four minor lacerations but nothing serious. A witness said the shark appeared to be about four feet long.

Theater review: A Woman of No Importance

Posted By on Thu, Jun 11, 2015 at 11:52 AM

Scanning the sometimes-scandalous text of Oscar Wilde’s A Woman of No Importance, you might wonder why it isn’t performed more often. The script isn’t as witty as The Importance of Being Earnest or as dramatic as Salome, but it artfully combines both of those elements. So we can be happy that PaperHouse Theatre has brought this provocative and pertinent work to us in such a creative fashion, staging their production at the Frock Shop on Central Avenue.

By day, it may be a store with frocks and tchotchkes to peddle, but by night when PaperHouse takes over, the Frock Shop reverts to a characterful country home. Our hostess Lady Hunstanton’s maid and footman, Francis and Alice, lead us from the front lawn to a couple of indoor set-ups between acts. That’s the concept, anyway. Last Saturday night, tempestuous winds intervened and wrecked the opening lawn tableau. We were forced to pick up our choice of beverage on the porch and adjourn immediately to the parlor.
