Lunch Break (11/10/15): Bank robbery leads to police chase, arrest

Posted By on Tue, Nov 10, 2015 at 11:30 AM

An attempted robbery of a Wells Fargo branch on Park Road this morning led to a police chase, ending in the arrest of two men. The men allegedly tried to rob the bank at around 10 a.m. The car chase reportedly ended in west Charlotte near the intersection of LaSalle Street and Beatties Ford Road.

A woman was pulled to safety through a second-story window during a condo fire in the Elizabeth neighborhood this morning. All residents in the condo are expected to be OK. One cat in the building was killed during the fire, while two others were rescued and given oxygen. The fire reportedly happened around 8:15 a.m. on Vail Avenue, and more than 30 firefighters responded to the scene.

A plane carrying 98 passengers and five crew members made an emergency landing in Charlotte this morning after an indicator light alerted pilots to a possible mechanical issue. The flight was reportedly traveling from Raleigh to Dallas. Officials said American Airlines Flight 2428 landed safely and crews are currently working on fixing the issue.

CMPD Chief Kerr Putney addressed city council and other city leaders last night before the council's meeting to discuss a recent spike in violent crime (17% increase) and homicides (47% increase). Putney said the priority should be to recruit more officers, with an emphasis on recruiting native-born men and women. Putney said the department's analysis will be ready by the end of the year.

Lunch Break (11/9/15): Newton takes down Packers banner as part of duty to 'protect this house'

Posted By on Mon, Nov 9, 2015 at 11:36 AM

A Green Bay Packers fan turned to police yesterday after Panthers quarterback Cam Newton tore down a large banner the man and his family had brought to wave in support of the Packers at Bank of America Stadium yesterday. The man claimed he had paid $500 for the banner, and that he would give the organization 48 hours to make it up to him before "taking further action." When asked about the banner following the game, which the Panthers won to remain undefeated, Newton told reporters that it is his "due diligence to protect this house."

A suspect has been arrested in the case of a 21-year-old mother who was shot during a home invasion last Tuesday. Police said 23-year-old Reco Dawkins Jr. turned himself in yesterday and has been charged with attempted murder, felony breaking and entering and conspiracy to commit felony breaking and entering. It has been reported that Semantha Bunce, a member of the National Guard who was at home with her newborn baby when Dawkins Jr. and another suspect allegedly kicked her door in, traded gunfire with the suspects. The second suspect has not yet been arrested or identified.

Officials are looking for a 14-year-old girl who hasn't been seen since leaving her family's subdivision in Monroe on a bicycle on Saturday afternoon. Police said Cheyenne Sides is five feet tall with brown hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing shorts and a teal top. Sides reportedly wears glasses and has braces. The Monroe Police Department is asking that anyone with information about Sides call them at 704-282-4700. This morning, Cheyenne's father Gary Sides, a member of the Union County Board of Education, wrote in a Facebook post that Cheyenne was brought to Wilkes County by taxi in an attempt to find her grandmother who no longer lives there.

University of Missouri President Tim Wolfe resigned this morning
following a meeting of the school's Board of Curators in response to protests among students and student-athletes regarding multiple incidents of racism on campus over the last 90 days. Student Jonathan Butler began the protests with a hunger strike, calling for the removal of Wolfe on the grounds that the school's leadership has allowed the incidents to go unanswered. Butler was later joined by the entire football team, which stated that players would be suspending all football activities until something was done to address the issue.

Dietz's Dracula is revamped with a vengeance

Posted By on Fri, Nov 6, 2015 at 10:23 AM

Steeped in ancient folklore and superstition, Bram Stoker’s Dracula began life in 1897 as a fiendishly clever Gothic novel. Layers of stage and screen adaptations, chiefly the 1931 Bela Lugosi film, have transformed the Transylvanian vampire into an industry, a genre, and a tradition, chiefly funneled toward Halloween celebrations.

Here in Charlotte, there have been highs and lows to our Dracula tradition. The unquestionable low was Charlotte Rep’s adaptation at McGlohon Theatre in 1989, an “authentic” adaptation so universally despised that one of the production’s participants, Duke Ernsberger, wrote a comedy, Dracula Bites, deriding it. Far more successful in meeting common expectations were the dance versions presented by NC Dance Theatre (now Charlotte Ballet) and Moving Poets Theatre of Dance.

The Moving Poets version, unforgettably staged in the ruins of Carolina Theatre in 1997, was a landmark, arguably the chief reason why creepshows now rule our theatre scene each year with the onset of October. Steven Dietz’s adaptation, now running at Theatre Charlotte, doesn’t add a new chapter to the tradition, for it first opened here on Halloween night in 2003 at CPCC.

But it’s certainly a high point, ranking right up there among the best with the Moving Poets’ saturnalia. Directed by Dave Blamy, this new version at the Queens Road barn sports the set and lighting designs of Chris Timmons, making for some spectacularly unexpected entrances and exits by the Prince of Darkness and his maniacal slave, Renfield.

Lunch Break (11/5/15): Republican stalwart and Mecklenburg representative Rucho to retire from state legislature in 2016

Posted By on Thu, Nov 5, 2015 at 11:30 AM

N.C. Senator Bob Rucho announced this morning that he will not seek re-election in 2016. He plans to retire following his seventh non-consecutive term. Rucho, a Republican from Matthews, was first elected in 1996. He played a major part in redistricting — and some have said gerrymandering — North Carolina into consistently seeing a large Republican majority in the state legislature. He also led a push for major tax changes in the state over his 17 years in office.

A former Cornelius high school student has blown the lid off a "sextortion" case in which at least 16 local girls, most of which minors, were being blackmailed with nude photos of themselves. A warrant states the girl, who now attends a college in Pittsburgh, received photos she took of herself in various states of undress while she was a student at Hough High School. The suspect threatened to release the photos if the girl didn't send more similar photos. After she went to police, the resulting investigation found 15 other female students at Hough high School, ages 14 to 18, going through similar situations. Some girls complied with the suspect and most girls did not go to authorities for fear that their parents would find out. Police investigated a similar case at Hough High School in January after a Dropbox file containing 75 photos of nude female students, including many of 14-year-old freshmen, was brought to the attention of police.

Union County officials announced this morning that popular fishing spot Cane Creek Park is reopened to boaters, after an unsafe rise in water levels due to recent rains caused them to shut it down. Officials said levels at the 350-acre lake have reportedly decreased to a safe level and floating debris has been removed. Trails remain closed to bikers and horse-riders. The tweet below shows how the lake looked following heavy rains over the weekend and on Monday.

The husband of Semantha Bunce, the woman shot in her home while caring for her newborn baby on Tuesday, told reporters yesterday that she exchanged gunfire with the two suspects inside the home before being shot. Bunce is in the National Guard Reserve and is a stay-at-home mother. The couple's other daughter was at school at the time of the home invasion. Her husband, Paul Bunce, said she is still in and out of consciousness but is "making progress." No arrests have been made in the case.

Construction crews broke ground on a new, $90-million facility to add to its Indian Land campus yesterday. The facility, titled RV4, is expected to bring 1,500 new jobs to the Lancaster, South Carolina campus, just over the border from Ballantyne in Charlotte. RV4 will reportedly consist of three buildings totaling 300,000 square feet. The company expects to finish the facility in mid-2017 and will be hiring employees to fill it over the next seven years.
