Lunch Break (5/19/16): Lights out in Uptown; SC detective accused of sexually coercive behavior against rape victim

Posted By on Thu, May 19, 2016 at 11:30 AM

A wreck in Uptown this morning caused power outages in the area, affecting power lights and snarling traffic in areas. About 1,400 people were reportedly left without power and CMPD was reporting to multiple intersections where the traffic lights had gone out. The power was expected to be restored by 11:30 a.m. (Justin Pryor, WCCB)

No one was injured in a wreck involving a school bus near West Charlotte High School this morning, officials said. A car smashed into the back of the CMS bus on Southwest Boulevard near Beatties Ford Road just after 9 a.m. this morning. (Joe Marusak & Davie Hinshaw, Charlotte Observer)

A lawsuit filed yesterday alleges that a former Horry County, South Carolina detective threatened to keep a rape victim from seeing her children if she refused to participate in a "nude catfight" with another woman that would be filmed and shown to "a group of men in the area" who like to watch such things. Now former detective Allen Large was reprimanded after the woman originally reported his behavior to his department in May of last year. In June, he allegedly sexually assaulted her following a court date and was terminated from the force after that incident. Several months ago, Large was sued by another sexual assault victim for similar behavior. (Ian Cross & Connor McCue, WBMF via WBTV)

It is still unclear what caused the disappearance of Egypt Air Flight 804, which officials believe has crashed somewhere off the Greek island of Karpathos. There were 66 people on the flight, including 56 passengers and 10 crew members. An Egyptian aviation official said the possibility of a terrorist attack is greater than that of mechanical failure, while a Russian security official is quoted as saying the crash "in all likelihood" was caused by a terrorist attack. The incident happened at around 12:30 a.m. Detectives arrested two men in an apartment complex on the same street. Police are asking for the public's help in finding a suspect in a shooting that took place last night in Kings Mountain. Todd Owens allegedly shot James Smith, Jr., in the chest yesterday evening. Smith is said to be in stable condition. Owens was last seen in a black Honda Accord with rims and tinted windows. (Caryn Little, WCCB)

Apparently a local radio station in Morganton showed up to a Roses Discount Store for one of those fake concerts involving nineties music stars — Fred Durst in this case — playing in middle-of-nowhere non-venues. Our professional, journalistic take on this situation: lol. (Joe Bruno, WSOC)

Police have arrested a man following a shooting outside of Connolly's on Fifth in Uptown early this morning. Thomas Kerr allegedly fired multiple shots into the bar, causing damage to the building but not harming anyone. (Fox46 Staff)

There were no serious injuries in a wreck involving an ambulance near Queens University this morning. The wreck happened at around 9:45 a.m. this morning on Queens Road W at Selwyn Avenue and took down power lines. No word yet on what caused the accident. (WBTV Web Staff)

According to a CMPD report released this morning, the man struck by a vehicle on Monroe Road in mid-April died of the resulting injuries yesterday. Police said 58-year-old Wayne Ivey was crossing Monroe Road in an area without a marked crosswalk on the afternoon of April 19 when he was struck by a woman driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer. Speed and alcohol abuse were not factors in the use. (Ryan Pitkin)

Snakes season has arrived north of Charlotte apparently, as two incidents made clear yesterday afternoon. A 12-year-old Mooresville boy is recovering in the hospital after reportedly being bitten by a venomous snake while digging for worms near a Lake Norman dock. (Jenna Deery, WSOC) Meanwhile in Denver, a man was bit by a four-and-a-half-foot-long copperhead while shopping in the gardening department of Lowe's yesterday afternoon. (WSOC Staff)

Posted By on Mon, May 16, 2016 at 11:30 AM

A portion of Tuckaseegee Road will be closed through tomorrow after construction crews reportedly ruptured a water main. The accident happened at the intersection of Tuckaseegee and Berryhill roads. (Justin Pryor, WCCB) In NoDa, a portion of North Davidson Street between 36th Street and Craighead Road closed this weekend and will remain closed until June 13th due to unsuitable soil found during the construction of the LYNX Blue Line Extension. (Ashley Armstrong, WCCB) A "Bus Roadeo," a public transit competition being held in Uptown Charlotte today, will shut down parts of South Brevard Street near E. Martin Luther King Boulevard and the NASCAR Hall of Fame today until about 4 p.m. (Karen Sullivan, Charlotte Observer)

The Transportation Security Administration implemented changes to security lines at Charlotte Douglas International Airport this morning that it hopes will speed up the process of getting passengers through security. The TSA reportedly moved its priority lane from Checkpoint C to Checkpoint D and also moved its pre-check line from Checkpoint E to Checkpoint D. (Editor's note: I have no idea what means but I'm flying on Friday so I hope it works.) (Brandon Golder, WCNC)

A 14-year-old boy was seriously injured in Monroe last night when he was reportedly struck by a van on Highway 74 in Monroe. Lunch Break (5/13/16): Obama administration to issue decree to country's public schools regarding transgender discrimination

Posted By on Fri, May 13, 2016 at 11:30 AM

The Obama administration is expected to issue a directive to every public school district in the country today ordering them to allow transgender students to use the restroom of the gender they identify with. The decree is not a lawful order, but implies that not following along could result in lawsuits or the loss of federal aid. (Julie Hirschfield Davis & Matt Apuzzo, New York Times) This action was presumably spurred by the upcoming court battle between the U.S. government and the state of North Carolina regarding House Bill 2, which ordered everyone to use the restroom of the gender listed on their birth certificate, among other things. The latest news in regards to HB2 is that the Obama administration announced yesterday that it will not cut federal education funding to the state while the issue is battled out in court. (Colin Campbell, News & Observer)

A student was reportedly shot and wounded at a Greenville, South Carolina high school this morning. A spokesperson for the Greenville County School District said the shooting happened on the campus of Southside High School in an "isolated incident" and the victim was treated by the school nurse. (Fox46 Staff)

Police are searching for the people who abandoned two small children in two separate spots in Charlotte yesterday. A girl believed to be 2 years old (right) and a boy believed to be about 4 months old (left) were found near different CMPD stations yesterday. Police at first looked for public assistance in identifying the children but announced this morning that the children have been identified. The children were evaluated at CMC Main as a precaution and are said to be in good health. Police are still investigating this case and are presumably looking for the children's parents, although officials have not said who they believe to be responsible. (Ryan Pitkin)

A 9-year-old girl missing for more than a week was found yesterday by two men searching the backwoods of northeastern Tennessee after hearing her story in the news. Police say Donnie Lawson and Roger Carpenter came across Carlie Marie Trent and her uncle, Gary Simpson, in Hawkins County. One man held a gun on Simpson while the other went to call for help. Officials said it did not appear Trent was harmed. Simpson has been charged with especially aggravated kidnapping and may face further charges according to a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokesperson. (Associated Press via WSOC)

A man who stole a school bus from Cannon School in Concord early this morning and led police on a chase that ended in Davidson County told police that God must have put the bus there for him to take "because he needed to get out of there." Despite God's wishes, 49-year-old Steven Karambells was charged with stealing a vehicle, felony speeding to elude arrest, reckless driving, attempting to assault a government official and failing to stop for blue lights and siren.
