News Lunch Break (6/17/16): Multiple fire-related incidents in Charlotte area

Rowan County police are working to identify a woman whose body was discovered earlier this morning on Leonard Road in Salisbury. Police had initially responded to a 911 caller who reported seeing the woman’s body on the side of the road at about 6:30 a.m. Emergency aid rushed to the scene, but determined the woman was already dead. Investigators are calling the case a homicide, and have blocked traffic in both directions on Leonard Road as they continue to search the area where the body was discovered. Some reports indicate that the woman’s body had been burned. (Gina Esposito, WSOC)
A dispute in Lancaster resulted in two people being flown to a burn center for emergency treatment last night. Lancaster police received a call at around 11:30 p.m. reporting that an individual had been set on fire near the 100 block of N. Gregory Street. Responding officers found a vehicle on fire at the scene. Witnesses told officers that the victim had already been driven to the hospital, and that the person responsible for setting the victim on fire had also sustained burn injuries, and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Police have not identified either individual, and are continuing to investigate. (WBTV Staff)
An early morning house fire in Matthews lead fire officials to block off all traffic in the area, including two roads leading to the Central Piedmont Community College Levine campus. Fire crews were called to the scene at 5:30 a.m. and CPCC Lane and Campus Ridge Road remained closed as fire officials extinguished the blaze and conducted an investigation. No injuries were reported, and the roads reopened by 9 a.m. (Joe Marusak, Charlotte Observer)
The I-85 northbound exchange to I-77 will remain closed following a crash this morning that involved a tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer was traveling on the ramp at around 10:20 a.m. when it overturned. Officials have not revealed whether other vehicles were involved, or if there were any injuries, but did state that the ramp will remain closed until further notice. (WCNC Staff)

News Lunch Break (6/16/16): Fatal wreck follows carjacking near Hidden Valley; tech job fair at CPCC tomorrow

One person was killed in an accident on W. Sugar Creek Road that stemmed from a carjacking near the Hidden Valley neighborhood this morning. Police shut Sugar Creek down between Hidden Valley and Reagan Drive following the accident, which occurred around 9:40 a.m., and it's expected to remain closed for several hours, according to the city. The car was apparently stolen at knifepoint earlier in the morning and the wreck was the result of a police chase.

Tech employers will be looking to fill hundreds of job positions at a job fair at Central Piedmont Community College's Ballantyne campus tomorrow between 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Companies like AT&T, Delhaize America, LendingTree, The Hartford Financial Services and Vidant Health will be looking to fill positions that include jobs in software development, IT, project management, cloud computing and marketing. No power outages were reported after a car slammed into a utility pole in north Charlotte early this morning. Police say the car was the only involved in the accident. It struck the pole on Atando Avenue between Graham and North Tryon streets at around 3:30 a.m., shutting the road down for a few hours while crews worked to fix it. The driver of the car was transported to the hospital but it's unclear how severe the injuries were. (WSOC Staff)
Part of an attack by machete-wielding men on a couple in a Gastonia laundromat on Tuesday night was caught on surveillance video, showing the suspect taking money from one of the victims. According to the female victim's husband, the video did not catch a violent confrontation in front of the store, during which he said he attacked the suspects in defense of his wife. The suspects made off with $30 and a tablet, and no one has yet been arrested in relation to the case. (Xavier Walton, WCNC)
