Bonnaroo
June 15, 2008
Manchester, Tenn.
I got three hours of sleep last night... Turns out that Kanye went on around 4:30 and played until 5:45. When people got back from the show, they blasted music through large speakers, continued drinking and woke up just about everyone in the camping area. "Welcome to Bonnaroo," right?
Sunday Funday at Summer Pops as in in Charlotte Symphony's Sunday summer concerts series in Symphony Park...at South Park. That's a lot of parks.
Speaking of which, good luck trying to find a place to park your car or your booty if you dont get there early. The best way to describe the crowd is well, crowded. It gets so crowded in fact that people go to the park around 8 a.m. to lay out blankets to reserve their spot for the 6:30 p.m. show. By noon, you cant even see the grass.

The third day of Bonnaroo could almost be called Mudaroo, if not for a small miracle that turned into sunshine late in the morning. What started out as a rainy cold day, turned into the festival's best - not too hot, a little overcast and a perfect night.
A long set by Pearl Jam (setlist at the end), The Avett Brothers blowing everyone away and...well, did Kanye ever show up?

Well, I made it through all of last year and one-and-a-half days this year of no rain at Bonnaroo, but that streak was quickly broken. It started raining just before the headling sets of Chris Rock and Metallica (a setlist follows this blog) and went through the Superjam (set also listed at end) this morning. I'm working on about four hours of sleep, but it's the music that keeps me going...
Forecast for today: more rain...good times.

Thursday, June 12
Manchester, Tenn.
It almost feels like I never left ... When I pulled up to the site yesterday, it all seemed familiar and oddly comfortable -- well, until the sweating started.
It's hot here ... really hot. But that's to be expected. I also expected that half way through the bands of the day, I'd know it was all worth it.
On Thursday after 5 p.m., all hell breaks lose in Uptown Charlotte the two after fives go head to head like the Ultimate Fighting Godz of War coming to the Time Warner Cable Arena.
In this corner .EpiCentre at 5
The Pavilion at the EpiCentre made its debut just three weeks ago with The Pat McGee Band. And last night Joystick played to a literally hot crowd on the rooftop of Charlottes new (so new its still under construction) entertainment complex under the skyline. Youre so high up on the roof that it kind of makes you want to climb up on a crane and bungee jump down.
And in this corner Alive After Five
This is the original After Five that is responsible for making Thursday the new Friday at the Wachovia Atrium. Their band roster includes a Michael Jackson Tribute band, a Journey Tribute band, Almost McGraw, and last night a Led Zepplin tribute band. This may just be me, but I feel that cover bands are better when theyre comprised of Little People. Cason Point: Mini Kiss and Mini Britney.
For the third week in a row the new kid on the block has managed to claim victory over the traditional, judging by attendance and the fun meter, proving Charlotte isnt just fickle about the Panthers. The EpiCentre is able to trump Wachovia because a) its new and b) theres Suite right across the balcony and Whisky River downstairs. Whereas all there is at Wachovia is Mimosa (a restaurant) and an office buildings.
What do you think? Out with the old and in with the new?
Yesterday was a national holiday ...
The birthday of Jacinda from Brotha Freds A.M. Mayhem on 96.1 The Beat. You know Jacinda with the Sleazy, Jacinda with the Sleaze (cue David L singing the jingle) ... but last night her theme song was Happy Birthday (or the lyric from 50 Cents "In Tha Club" rather: GO GO GO Go Shorty, its your birthday, we gonna party like its your birthday!)
So to embark on the celebration of National Jacinda Day, Brotha Freds A.M. Mayhem had a V.I.P dinner for her ... at Red Lobster.
CMA Fest
Nashville, Tenn.
June 5-8, 2008
The Deal: The Country Music Association Festival took over Nashville last week the way NASCARnival takes over Charlotte. Just about every country music star performed at some point over the weekend; it was the Bonnaroo of country music. Meanwhile, The Nashville Convention Center was like a career fair
for striving country artists and a country fair for country music fans. There were redneck games like fake logging and oil drilling, karaoke and long lines of autograph seekers trying to get a sharpie scribble from their favorite artist. As for the strip of Nashville during the CMA Fest...remember Speed Street? Kinda like that, but sans the turkey leg stands serving cheesecake on a stick.
Once again, I'll be posting daily blogs and photos from Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tenn.
You can expect to find them each morning Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday for the previous day's events.
