MARSHALL RUFFIN TRIO The Columbus, Ga., singer had the audience in awe during the inaugural night of the Crowntown Showdown a few months back. Needless to say, he walked away as the winner. That time he was solo – singing songs that sounded like a '30s movie soundtrack with bluesy, growly, almost-Waits-ian vocals and plenty of guitar talent. Who knows what he'll do as a trio ... Live Photos: 2008 Warped Tour

Posted By on Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 2:33 PM

The 2008 Vans Warped Tour stopped by Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre on July 14 for a long, hot day filled with about as much musical variety as you could ask for.

From the pop of Katy Perry to the screaming of Every Time I Die, Warped Tour attendees surely got their money's worth.

There was plenty of crowd surfing and the tossing of odd multi-colored spiders that usually got a response of "What the fuck?!?" from whichever musician was hit by one (see photos of Reel Big Fish and Oreskaband for examples).

Here are some of the sights from the day...

Vans Warped Tour It would take the rest of this page to list all of the bands playing at this year's Warped Tour, but here are a few that you'll catch: Aside from The Pink Spiders and Against Me!, who have both been featured in this section recently (and today), you'll get Angels and Airwaves (featuring former Blink-182-er Tom DeLonge), Katy Perry (CD reviewed this week), Cobra Starship, Alesana, Every Time I Die, Family Force 5, Gym Class Heroes, Norma Jean, Reel Big Fish, Story of the Year, The Bronx and a whole helluva lot more. It's a long hot day, but you can always pass the time counting facial piercings on all the kids. Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre (Jeff Hahne)

The New Familiars played a free show at the Neighborhood Theatre on Friday, July 11. Hundreds turned out for a fantastic, sweat-soaked show, as the band showed why they're one of the fastest growing acts in the Charlotte area.

Here are few sights from Friday:

Glen Phillips Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Phillips, once known as the frontman for alterna-popsters Toad the Wet Sprocket, has been releasing finely honed solo records ever since his day-band broke up back in 1998. Phillips' writing and playing are continually evolving into better and better compositions. Sprocket may have been written off as alterna light, but Phillips is certainly no hack or has been. His new recording is Secrets of the New Explorers. With Antje Duvekot. Evening Muse (Samir Shukla)

Green Jellÿ in Charlotte!

Posted By on Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 9:47 AM

By Taylor Greer

Green Jellÿ (first known as Green Jellö, but Kraft Foods put an end to that) is coming to Charlotte and just in time for my birthday!! I know I’m dating myself but what the hell; I loved Green Jellÿ when they came out with Cereal Killer in 1993. If I had known that Rev. Maynard of Tool was the high-pitched voice of the little pigs in "Three Little Pigs," I would have been absolutely obnoxious to my friends. As it was, the CD stayed in the portable CD player on the floor of my mom’s Buick for months. I doubt Maynard will be in Charlotte, but I'll be singing "Not by the hair on my chinny-chin-chin" just as loudly as ever.

Relive your high school days or discover a funny heavy metal band at Tremont Music Hall on July 17 at 8 p.m. Their lyrics are imaginative if not a little juvenile (“It’s poo-poo, poo-poo!”), but the musical composition is creative and extremely talented. And the costumes should be entertaining. Just for fun, tell the guys at the door, "Little pig, little pig, let me in!"

Check out Wikipedia for more Green Jelly – Tool connections!

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers For three decades now, Tom Petty has been as reliable an American songwriter as anyone you care to mention, Leonard Cohen, Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen included. He started out being lumped in with the punk/new wave crowd, became post-punk, became an MTV staple, became a solo artist and then became an elder statesman – all while still retaining credibility with all the above-named camps. Don't believe me? Go see his live show, whose audience features equal parts septum-pierced, septuagenarians and soccer moms. With Steve Winwood. Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre (Timothy C. Davis)

Nicolette Emmanuelle A gifted pianist and cellist, Emmanuelle's celebrating the release of her ASC grant-funded debut, Pinafore; the music residing somewhere between PJ Harvey's smoldering heat and Kate Bush's (early) off-kilter cool. Recorded by Jim Payseur of Lotus Studio, the ten songs also feature Laura Witkowski on drums and Molly J. Brown playing tuba, though the live band this evening will be comprised of David Kim (drums), Brent Bagwell (sax) and Brown (trombone and tuba) filling in the cello parts. With Buschovski. Snug Harbor (John Schacht)

The New Familiars What better way to give something back to your fans than to offer up a free show? TNF are doing just that. They recently released a vinyl single with a stunning cover of "My Girl" and their infectious Americana will get your feet moving in no time. Get there early; these guys have a dedicated fanbase. American Aquarium and Horse Ghost. Neighborhood Theatre (Jeff Hahne)

Mac Daddys...

Posted By on Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 3:02 PM

I was working production on a Sony Bravia commercial being shot here in Charlotte, and some of the crew from L.A. asked me where to go to get first-rate Carolina BBQ. So I sent them to Mac’s Speed Shop on South Blvd.

But last night I came to realize that Macs has much more than brisket… as in over 140 different kinds on beer. Not to mention bikers….lots of them, considering it was Bike Night.
