A bar of beauty

Posted By on Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 5:37 PM

Last week, The Shops at Caramel Village converted into a beauty bash during the Beauty Crawl. But there wasn’t too much crawling – now I’m not talking about the Santa bar crawl where people dressed like snowflakes and elves were stumbling from bar to bar pretending to be led by an imaginary Rudolph while girls in slutty santa suits were chanting “Ho, Ho, Ho!”

Although, this crawl was festive in it’s own right.

The Beauty Crawl was a quaint party including two makeshift beauty bars and a tea bar: Salon Tribeca, Skin Elements, and Urbana City Spa & Tea Bar.

Hooray for Earth Sounding like a more muscled Pinback on new wave synth steroids, this quartet of Beantowners has been nominated for a BMA (Boston Music Award) for Outstanding Rock Act of the Year. Their self-titled debut has been reissued on Dopamine, but it's their Cellphone EP that has folks up North wondering if HFE might be Boston's heirs to Mission of Burma, Volcano Suns, Morphine and the Pixies. Music Menu, 12/13/08

Posted By on Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 5:00 AM

Hot Tuna Hot Tuna's Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen, both of whom have been hunting white wabbits since the mid-'60s with Jefferson Airplane, don't seem ready to rest their collective heads on the pop-star pillow – Surrealistic or otherwise – anytime soon. Kaukonen's finger-picked blues, jazz and bluegrass-inflected fretboard runs still sound as silvertoned and shimmery as ever, with Casady's loose, loping bass runs providing the requisite rubbery low end. Long may they swim. Neighborhood Theatre (Davis)

Fuzz and Mac Fuzz Jaxx and McClain Sullivan are Fuzz and Mac. What makes this duo's jazzy and trippy hip-hop so warm is the foundation of soul and old-school beats. The male/female vocals and natural inflections further gel their sound. Originally a part of the now-defunct Organix, the pair later reunited to form this funky duo. Listen to them with a loved one. With Still Life Static and Audioform. Tremont Music Hall (Shukla)

Dion Heroes — Tearing through classics, you’d never guess he’s 70-years old.

Semi-Precious Weapons We Love You — Garage-style glam rock with androgynous singer is campy fun. (At the Milestone on Jan. 29, 2009)

Hoots and Hellmouth Hoots and Hellmouth — Gospel-fused roots rock is sure to get feet moving.

Various Artists Punisher Soundtrack — Plenty of metal including a new song by Rob Zombie.

Hillary Duff Best of Hillary Duff — It’s an oxymoron to say Best of and Hillary Duff.

Laura Reed & Deep Pocket Live at Tree Sound Studios — Soulful singer brings the funk with a hint of blues.

Portugal. The Man Censored Colors — A bit of mellowed-out Mars Volta-style psychedelic rock.

The Radiators Wild & Free — New Orleans quintet releases swamp-soaked live, rare rock compilation.

The Bridge Blind Man’s Hill — 12 tracks of rock mixed with Southern soul, country, funk.

Solange Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams — Beyonce’s sister tries her best to separate herself…poorly accomplished.

Music Menu, 12/12/08

Posted By on Fri, Dec 12, 2008 at 5:00 AM

Switchfoot Frontman Jon Foreman's crooning tempers the San Diego-based band's Christian rock and power pop. Credit this combo for, um, evolving their sound over the past decade into a varied and eclectic pop-rock that appeals to listeners outside the Christian music fold. It's that forward gazing post-grunge ethos, mixed with straight alt.rock and melodic vocals that help keep the band heads above herd. With 3 Doors Down. Bojangles Coliseum (Shukla)

Ten Out Of Tenn Ten artists from Tennessee will perform original and classic holiday tunes. Those playing are: Erin McCarley, Matthew Perryman Jones, Butterfly Boucher, Griffin House, Tyler James, K.S. Rhoads, Trent Dabbs, Katie Herzig, Andy Davis and Jeremy Lister. Visulite (Hahne)
