Fantasia Barrino to film VH1 reality show

Posted By on Thu, Apr 16, 2009 at 10:53 AM

Former 'Idol' winner will have a new series that documents her life as a singer and single mother. Shouldn't she first focus on getting people to buy her CDs and go to her concerts?

The show will premiere in 2010.

Music Menu (4/16/09)

Posted By on Thu, Apr 16, 2009 at 7:00 AM

Kevin Gordon East Nashville resident Gordon's essential disc to this point, Down to the Well, was one of the first (indeed, only) records in recent memory to effectively blend the Roots Trilogy (blues, rockabilly and country) and make it sound not only natural but essential. A graduate of the University of Iowa (where he studied poetry at the mega-prestigious Iowa Writers' Workshop), Gordon never lost his first love, that of early rock & roll as purveyed by Lewis, Berry, Cochran and Co. Gordon's high-profile supporters do spring up on Well (including Lucinda Williams), but they never overshadow the fact that Gordon is the show (those who've seen him at his infrequent Charlotte gigs know what I'm talking about). Plus, if rock aesthete Keith Richards covers one of your songs, you know you're doing pretty alright all by your lonesome. With The Stereofidelics and Jeffrey Gaines. The Evening Muse

Live hip-hop in Charlotte?

Posted By on Wed, Apr 15, 2009 at 10:35 AM

My band, Actual Proof, recently had a live hip-hop group open up for us at a recent show. Watching and listening to them got me thinking: It’s tough to pull off live hip-hop for several reasons — some artistic and some technical.

There’s no shortage of MCs who think they’ve got it but, in fact, need to spend some long hard hours rehearsing their material. I’ve also seen MCs who are good with their tracks but have problems working with a live band. The interaction that makes for a good live performance is difficult for MCs who spend all their time flowing over tracks. Unfortunately, you can’t just get up on stage with a live band and hope that all goes well.

Music Frenzy Festival cancelled?

Posted By on Tue, Apr 14, 2009 at 3:19 PM

According to one post by Simplified, the Music Frenzy Festival scheduled for Saturday, April 18, at Dixies Tavern has been cancelled:

"If you haven't already heard THE PROMOTERS of THE MUSIC FRENZY FESTIVAL had to cancel/postpone the event Saturday due to business issues with the owners of the parking lot that the festival was being held at. We appreciate all of our fans that were planning on coming out to support us at the festival. Please spread the word that this entire event will not be taking place to anyone you know that was planning on attending! We look forward to seeing you soon!"

If you go to the official Web site, it says the "event has moved," but no location is given.

Stay tuned...
