The Coal Men get down and dirty (12/03/2009)

Posted By on Thu, Dec 3, 2009 at 10:21 AM

The Coal Men Dave Coleman's, er, Coal Men doesn't stray far from even the most middle-of-the-road MOR. Even the band's label describes its music as meat and potatoes ... calls it "old school" music. Which could lead you to believe that listening to these Coal Men is pretty much the aural equivalent of sitting down to a tinned dinner of corned beef hash: Rib-stickin', yet redundant. Yet, to Coleman's credit, it works. The band's latest, Kids With Songs, was recorded on a 16-track analog reel-to-reel (that's good old-school), and most of it was done live in the studio. True, it's still slicker than the spit that used to seal deals on Nashville's Music Row – there's more than a bit of country in the band's country-rock – but it's an honest slick, meaning finely polished, not bowdlerized. Call it "Jeff Twitty" – equal parts early Wilco and Conway-style country, served without pretense. Double Door Inn

Visiting Mexico Rock City

Posted By on Wed, Dec 2, 2009 at 12:36 PM

On a recent business trip to Monterrey, Mexico, I was asking my counterpart Jose’ what the music scene looks like south of the border, where the tacos are cheap, and the Tecate is cheaper.

“There are two types of people in Mexico” he explained, “ones who like U.S. music, and ones who like Nortena. No one likes both.”

What’s Nortena music you ask?

“Nortena is like tex-mex + country + lots of trumpets and a lot of peachy, high pitched voices. People love high pitched voices.”

Since the city is only a couple of hours from the U.S. border, there are lots of American radio stations that can be picked up, hence the U.S. type.

Once you enter the main part of the city, it’s easy to see that music is a BIG deal in Monterrey. There are billboards everywhere for various artists and groups alike. This is because Monterrey has an enormous arena in the middle of downtown that averages two to three concerts per week. Everything from local bands to big stars in Mexico to Madonna.

CD Review: Melanie Fiona

The Deal: Canadian born R&B singer releases debut as buzz builds behind her second hit song in the U.S.

The Good: No real problems with her voice or the production. The singles really are the best tracks. Have to love the single from a year ago, "Give It To Me Right" which samples The Zombies, "Time of the Season" and "It Kills Me."

The Bad: It sounds like movie montage music, if that makes sense. Like all the songs seem like they were written for a movie or TV soundtrack, not regular music consumption. The whole pop soul thing comes off more Disney than Whitney, not a lot of soul involved whatsoever. Could be fitting for a teen movie or MTV show, but not for riding around.

The Verdict: This may have been exactly what she was going for. The Winehouse appeal she may have been going for fails because Winehouse did soul that turned pop not pop that has a twinge of soul. Really wanted to like it, but as far as the listening experience, I'm not really feeling it.

Over Mountain Men features Childers, Crawford

Posted By on Tue, Dec 1, 2009 at 11:11 AM

We got a press release about these guys a month ago, and have no excuse for not sharing the news until now. Either way, we thought we should let you know about a new group made up of The Avett Brothers' Bob Crawford on bass, singer/guitarist David Childers, guitarist Randy Saxon and drummer Robert Childers called Over Mountain Men.

The group is going to release its debut CD, Glorious Day, on Ramseur Records early next year.

The songs were recorded primarily at Old House Studios in Gastonia. Additional songs were recorded at The Grange, Greenville, N.C., and the Milestone Club. Some of the guest players on the album are Andy the Doorbum, Eric Mullis, Joe Kwon and a handful of others.
