Imagine all the hokey things that make elementary school plays cute. The hand drawn and crudely cut out props, all that jazz. Add some cool lighting, effects and rapper Lupe Fiasco in the midst of it all and you have the recipe for his video for "I'm Beamin," his latest single.
The video, directed by Illusive Media, really isn't much to write home about but with Lupe set to tell the world a release date for his long awaited album, LASERS, sometime soon. It is something to keep the rapper fresh our minds.
You can also read our review of Lupe Fiasco & B.o.B at UNC Charlotte last week here.
The Deal: Is it time for Rhode Island to make it's mark on the hip hop landscape? New mixtape from R.I. native makes a solid argument that they do.
The Good: It was really different not in a wannabe rockstar way, not in an avant garde way, either. It just didn't strike me like anything I'd listened to lately, I mean, how many rappers are throwing hard snares over classical music? "The Monocle" serves as the mixtapes' mission statement and let's you get a better understanding of what to expect from the rapper whom I'd never heard of until last week. The entire project was produced by $port and has a sound that's experimental without being just noise. Lots of clever lyrics that you'll miss on first listen or if you're not listening closely.
The Bad: Needs more than one listen for appreciation but thankfully it's only seven tracks, so multiple plays insist a time suck.
The Verdict: It's a cool EP. You'll be hard pressed to find many rappers spitting about the everyday struggle and Earl Grey tea.Would love to hear more or hear him over more traditional beats. It's hard to find info on Theo Martins or $port individually but they've also done work as the duo Chris Connery since 2009 (for those trying to find more).

So, apparently Trent Reznor and his wife are making music together under the monicker How to Destroy Angels. Looks like new music from the Nine Inch Nails headmaster could be due this summer. Sounds kinda like NIN, if you ask me:

As many of you know, I appear on 91.7 FM WSGE every other Wednesday. I was on this morning to talk about upcoming shows such as MerleFest, Alberta Cross and Levon Helm.
WSGE is currently having their spring membership drive fundraiser and it's a great way to give back to a station that provides so much great music and local support. (This posting is completely unsolicited, by the way.)
Head over the radio station's site and show them some love. Also, tune in for some great interviews in the coming days:
April 28 - Jake Haldenwang at 7 p.m.
April 29 - Cottonmouth at 12 p.m.
April 30 - OverMountain Men at 4:30 p.m.
May 3 - Ang Medlin at 12 p.m.; Robin Rogers at 4 p.m.; Scott Cable and Mookie Brill from Nappy Brown's band at 7 p.m.

Hole Nobody's Daughter
And you thought Eryukah Badu's little stroll in the nude caused controversy... The video for M.I.A's song, "Born Free" has already been banned from YouTube in the States for its graphic images. There's full front nudity, people getting beaten, redheaded kids being chased through mine fields and some other pretty graphic shit that I won't ruin for you, but needless to say, it's crazy.
As far as the song goes, umm, don't see this one being the radio friendly club/banger "Paper Planes" was, but I highly doubt that's what she was shooting for either.
NSFW, watch with caution. Anybody that cares even the slightest about kids, may not want to click play.
