The Deal: Mississippi rapper/producer proves David Banner isn't the only one putting on for the 'Sip.
The Good: From track one, this album shines. "Return of 4eva," "Country Shit" and "Just Touched Down" are Chevy-friendly, but you'll hear things slowly begin to shift toward the meat on "Home Town Hero."
"Viktrorious" talks about how every state in the South has had their run except Mississippi and flashes a surprising lyricism from an artist you would pigeon hole into only making trunks rattle. For those still on the fence about his lyricism, "Children of the World" turned them into believers.
Has a certain Hustle & Flow aesthetic about it that lends to it's authenticity and is strangely refreshing. Absolutely loved how perfect this record mellowed out over time going from windows down, ghetto blasting to blunts on the front porch, chill.
The Bad: I honestly can't point to one fault on this mixtape, I just wish more people knew about/knew who he was.
The Verdict: A must-download. Beautiful blend of substance and Southern style with lyricism that sneaks up on you. Hey hip hop, I hate to break it to you but umm... we ain't goin nowhere if material like this keeps dropping. Hopefully the "trap" sound of the first few tracks won't scare listeners away from the rest.

People all over the Internet are going nuts for this kid, Greyson Michael. It's a great job, but I'm thinking it's a bit over-hyped... I'm also not digging his Justin Bieber haircut.
Anyway, check out his version of the Lady Gaga song, "Paparazzi." He plays the piano during a sixth-grade talent show.

OK, there's no other way to put this, but the subject keeps wafting in, so someone has to address it. When you're at a concert, or any other loud public event, please keep in mind that while people may not exactly hear you release your flatulence, that doesn't mean they won't smell it.
Gross? Yep, it is, without a doubt, but for some horrible reason, I keep finding myself in the vicinity of someone who obviously ate something that his/her digestive track did not agree with.
Last week, I was at Levon Helm a seated show at the Knight Theatre and was basically trapped in the vicinity of the culprit. Last night, I was at OK Go and when the stinky situation arose from somewhere near the soundboard, I could easily make a run for another part of the venue to get away.
Seriously that's why there are bathrooms. You may be trying to add your own bass line to the evening's events through a rumble out your backside, but you should remember that smell travels and there's no longer the stench of cigarette smoke to mask your intestinal distress.
Why bring this up in a blog posting? Because it's quite obvious that some people don't have common sense when it comes to these matters and don't care about the people around them. I don't want to smell you if you haven't showered, and I don't want to get a hint at what you might have eaten earlier in the day.
Next time, whoever you are, get your shit together, literally and let people enjoy the show... Everybody does it, but not everybody wants to know about it... or get a preview.
When we first met Robert Francis, he was releasing his second album, Before Nightfall, his first major label release (Atlantic), and was hitting the road to support the album. Now, just a few short months later, he will make his first appearance in the Queen City in support of OK GO! (Visulite Theatre, tonight).
Since our last talk, Francis has been all over, mainly overseas. When I caught up with him a couple of weeks ago, he was in Paris, after just completing stops in Germany. The tour is going great. Overseas is amazing. Im really getting a ton of support over here describes Francis, every show is sold out! Packed!
As far as stateside support for his new release Its starting to come around back home. Im primarily opening for other acts right now, but the idea is to soon headline and really give the audience my show.
Spoiler Alert! Last time we saw Drake get shot on screen, at least he lived. (Ahh, Degrassi humor).
What can we learn from Drake's video for the "Find My Love" from his constantly pushed back debut album, Thank Me Later? Always listen to Jamaican old heads. Their wisdom, while tinged in decades of marijuana logic, can save your life.
The video was very well shot and accomplished the goal of complimenting the song but two glaring questions jumped out at me; 1) Was his acting performance in this video indicative of what we would've saw on Degrassi. 2) Do you know how hard it is to make eye contact with a woman across the club!?! Like seriously, do you? Try that next time and watch your advances go ignored.
He'll be performing at The Fillmore Charlotte on May 25.
Here's a quick list of some of this week's new albums:
The Dead Weather Sea of Cowards
Keane Night Train
Meat Loaf Hang Cool Teddy Bear
The National High Violet
Portugal. The Man American Ghetto
We are the Fallen Tear the World Down
Danzig is going on a nine-date tour this summer to usher in the release of Deth Red Sabaoth, and Charlotte is one of the stops.
The band will perform at The Fillmore on June 16 with Gorgeous Frankenstein and Seventh Void.
The Deal: West Coast trio drops new mixtape after Church League Champions was one of 2009's best.
The Good: Had to listen multiple times before I could critically get over the excitement of just hearing new tracks from these guys. A few cuts stood out. "Birds" is a track that will either be one of your favorites or annoy you 15 seconds in. "Here We Go" features the late 2Pac, "Overcome" had the soul and spirit you expect from Pac Div over a gospely sample. "Waves At The Prom" and "Shine" are minimalistic but two of the dopest tracks on the project.
The Bad: Loved the "traditional" Pac Div sound before, but hearing them over "South" beats was awkward, while it had the sound of something from below the Mason-Dixon it was missing some of the spirit. They're much better at taking a traditional West Coast sound and expounding upon it. "Waves At The Prom" was barebones but hot.
The Verdict: Another mixtape that's album good. After flashing on the radar five or six years ago, they've grinded their way into indie/underground big names, hopefully there's something left in the tank for a real album now that they have hip hop's attention.
