Live review: Electric Coma

Electric Coma

Tremont Music Hall

June 24, 2010

Electric Coma is usually a duo, but performed as a single entity Thursday night at Tremont in support of its new EP, Plug In, released at the show.

Kaitlyn Kennedy was a one-woman band as she rotated between her stand-up keyboard and acoustic guitar. She has an astonishingly mature, dramatic voice for her early twenty-something age — comparable to that of a Sarah McLachlan or Tori Amos. The ambience and sound also reminded me of Michelle Pfeiffer's performance in the Fabulous Baker Boys — Beau and Jeff Bridges thankfully were nowhere in sight.

Tribute overload

Posted By on Mon, Jun 28, 2010 at 10:16 AM

One year after his surprising death, Michael Jackson tributes have dominated the airwaves and Net.

Was he the greatest? Sure. Is his mark on music and culture undeniable? Of course. But do I have to hear 24 hours straight of the King of Pops' classics?

We'll I'm not one to go against the demands of the people...here's some tributes I came across today before I started completely avoiding them. I'll let you decide if they're fitting.

Ron Artest is no fair weather fan of Michael Jackson.

The Los Angeles Lakers enigma and recent NBA champion not only decided to wear #37 in honor of how many weeks Jackson's Thriller album was number #1, he also recorded this tribute, "I Cry For Mike," that while hilarious bad at times is definitely heartfelt.

Dar Williams and Foxy Shazam tonight (June 28)

Posted By on Mon, Jun 28, 2010 at 8:38 AM

Dar Williams Songstress Dar Williams is spending the summer touring her clean, intelligent folk. The singer-songwriter takes on gender issues ("When I Was a Boy"), religion ("The Christians and the Pagans") and more in her socially and politically conscious songs, but don't think that means she doesn't have fun. The New York state native is prone to genre-hop in her choice of covers and has recorded her own versions of tracks by everyone from Pink Floyd ("Comfortably Numb") to Fountains of Wayne ("Troubled Times"). $22-$30, McGlohon Theatre, www.blumenthalcenter.org (Allie Goolrick)

Foxy Shazam Listening to front man Eric Nally evokes an immediate Freddy Mercury comparison. But that's not fair, where Mercury was suave and otherworldly, Nally is corky and spastic. Mercury was a magnetic front man and while Nally is no slacker on the mic, he's still in the developmental stage. The band's music is all over the place, '70s rock riffs, ska-like horns, sparring piano and bass and dancey percussion. They're hard to peg but are admittedly catchy. With Babyshaker and The Lights, Fluorescent. $8-$10, Tremont Music Hall, www.tremontmusichall.com (Samir Shukla)

Keeping Riley tonight (June 27)

Posted By on Sun, Jun 27, 2010 at 8:38 AM

Keeping Riley This septuplet group mixes many instruments to arrive at a poppy, uplifting brand of song. The lead vocals harmonize well with the up-and-down melodies of the rhythm guitar and background addition of a saxophone and an occasional flute. They are currently on tour in support of their new album released in May. With The Upside of Down, Israel Darling, Jacob's Ladder. $10-$12, Tremont Music Hall, www.tremontmusichall.com (Chris Triplett)

Kellie Pickler tonight (June 26)

Posted By on Sat, Jun 26, 2010 at 8:38 AM

Kellie Pickler Sometimes it's just amazing that the country bumpkin from Albemarle has grown up to grace large stages. Her Jessica Simpson-like ignorance won over the hearts of American Idol viewers, though I'd say her career has been far from Carrie Underwood's. Still, she's a familiar name and this would be considered a local show. Opening for Rascal Flatts. $35.25-$75.57, Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, www.livenation.com (Jeff Hahne)

Live review: Earth, Wind & Fire

Earth, Wind & Fire

Road Runner Mobile Ampitheatre

Thursday, June 24, 2010

The Deal: Stars align, inclement weather holds off and Earth, Wind & Fire puts on a show worthy of their legendary status.

The Good: The luxury of being EWF is knowing that if your voice isn't 100 percent on, the crowd will pick you up. Well, Phillip Bailey didn't allow that to happen. All the grumbling about him being good but founder Maurice White — who's no longer with the group — being better went out the window when Phillip just started hitting notes. Sometimes it just seemed outright unfair, you would've thought he was just showing off. Amazing.
