Demun Jones tonight (July 29)

Posted By on Thu, Jul 29, 2010 at 11:14 AM

DEMUN JONES The Gray, Ga., native often mixes various styles of rapping, predominately "dirty South rap," with his nothing-fancy but consistent acoustic guitar-playing. His main skill seems to be that of spewing rapid sentences from his blustering mouth that turn into stories of his life in the South and experiences of being in the music biz. Shades of Everlast in the '90s exist. He occasionally steps in and performs with the Southern/alt. rock, rap and reggae band Rehab, but is flying solo this time around in support of his first release, Light. The rendition of LL Cool J's classic "Going back to Cali" is a thumping ride of nostalgia. With Villanova. $10, Amos' Southend, www.amossouthend.com (Chris Triplett)

Live review: GBH

GBH w/ Outernational

Tremont Music Hall

July 27, 2010

The Deal: A good old fashioned punk rock show at Tremont with Antiseen, Outernational and GBH. Emphasis on old. It was kind of weird and funny to see 40 and 50 year-old weathered punks in the crowd and on stage. Re-scheduled show from June 2.

Live review: Sick Puppies

Sick Puppies w/ Janus, It's Alive

Amos' Southend

July 27, 2010

The Deal: Australia's Sick Puppies rocks Amos', brings along some cheese and whine.

SickPuppies2

The Good: I'll talk about the opening bands later, so let's just jump straight to the main event. The thing that struck me immediately was bassist Emma Anzai, who got into it from the first notes — a bit of slap bass, driving the music and rarely standing still. Singer/guitarist Shimon Moore balances smooth vocals with something a little bit more raspier when he screams for a tone that works well with the music.

After playing "My World," the band ran through a few bars of Rage Against the Machine's "Bombtrack" before starting "Odd One."

Of course Moore said it was just for Charlotte, but I'm guessing they do the three-song acoustic breakdown at every tour stop. They played "All the Same," "What Are you Looking For?" and "Too Many," before ramping the sound back up to 10.

NEW: Wale's "The Eyes of the Tiger"

Posted By on Wed, Jul 28, 2010 at 10:26 AM

It's been a while since we've heard from the face of DMV (DC-Maryland-Virginia) hip hop, Wale.

Yesterday, he released a new track, "Eyes of the Tiger" in lieu of his next mixtape, More About Nothing, slated for Aug. 3rd and while we've heard millions of Tiger Woods mashups and remixes, how many sample his voice then spit through his point of view?

It's not nearly as anthemic as his fans would lead on but it's pretty dope nonetheless. Don't hear a lot of Vijay Singh references on the radio.

Culture, Wiggle Wagons tonight (July 28)

Posted By on Wed, Jul 28, 2010 at 10:26 AM

CULTURE Since the death of his father, Joseph Hill, in 2006, Culture's been ably commanded by Kenyatta Hill, son of the famously dreadlocked and down-to-earth one. Culture was already some 30 years into its musical history when its patriarch died, yet still strike these ears as relevant as a touring act — interest in loping world rhythms and revolutionary politics are two things that seem to reinvent themselves every half-decade or so — thanks to the younger Hill's ever-developing songcraft. What's more, the Jamaican gents always seemed to love touring the Southeast, and have played all sorts of venues around the Q.C. over the years, including, if memory serves, a VFW hall. While Papa Hill will miss the bill, it's good to see the band getting a little of the respect it deserves. With Beres Hammond and Inner Circle. $30, Neighborhood Theatre, www.neighborhoodtheatre.com (Timothy C. Davis)

WIGGLE WAGONS With everyone mixing up genres these days, why not try taking a classic country sound of somebody like Johnny Cash and mixing it with the energy of, say, Guns N Roses. That's what the Wiggle Wagons do best. While you'd think the sound was born in the fields of the Carolinas, the band actually got its start in California. Now based in the Charlotte area, the band members and the music feel right at home. With Cattletruck and Zasz. $5, Snug Harbor, www.snugrock.com (Jeff Hahne)

What's the best decade for music?

Posted By on Tue, Jul 27, 2010 at 4:25 PM

It was a little before my time, but I view 1967 through 1976 as the pinnacle of music production in the modern music era. Hippie, psychedelic rock ruled, along with soul and r&b, folk, blues, country and funk. Free love was in the air and people still cared about actually making music and it wasn't solely about money and fame - although it quickly took a turn for the worse. Enter drug overdoses, plane crashes and disco. True, heartfelt music remained triumphant however.

A taste of the best from each year?:

1967 — The Beatles (Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band), The Doors (The Doors), The Jimi Hendrix Experience (Axis: Bold As Love), The Monkees (The Monkees), The Temptations (The Temptations in a Mellow Mood).

1968 — Johnny Cash (At Folsom Prison), Aretha Franklin (Aretha Now), Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR), Otis Redding (The Dock Of The Bay), Simon & Garfunkel (The Graduate Soundtrack).

1969 — The Kinks (Arthur Or The Decline And Fall Of The British Empire), Marvin Gaye (MPG/That's the Way Love Is), Bob Dylan (Nashville Skyline), Led Zeppelin (Led Zeppelin II), Joni Mitchell (Clouds).

Live review: FloydFest 2010

Posted By on Tue, Jul 27, 2010 at 12:42 PM

FloydFest 2010

Floyd, Virginia

July 22-25, 2010

The Deal: Four-day celebration of musical diversity set in the Virginia mountains.

The Good: Even though it's home to some of the coolest roots music from around the world, 2010's FloydFest offered little shelter from Saturday's sweltering heat. There was little shade to be found on the 80-acre site nestled on the side of a mountain just off the Blue Ridge parkway.

Festival goers seeking sun relief clustered around the tents erected over the sound booths at the various stages. But it didn't affect the enthusiasm of the estimated 14, 000 attendees. Even a half-hour delay past the posted start time 9 p.m. for Levon Helm did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the sweaty celebrants packed shoulder to shoulder for his Saturday night show.

Sights from the 2010 Vans Warped Tour

Posted By on Tue, Jul 27, 2010 at 10:48 AM

From screamo to rock, from punk to post-hardcore — there was a little bit of everything at the 2010 Vans Warped Tour, which stopped by Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre on July 22, 2010.

The day got started early — 11:15 a.m. — with a set by The Pretty Reckless and ended around 8 p.m.

I caught bits and pieces of about 25 bands on the seven stages that make up the tour — from the insanity of Andrew W.K. and the leaping of Dillinger Escape Plan to the rock of Sum 41 and Dirty Little Rabbits (which features Shawn "Clown" Crahan of Slipknot). There was the celtic punk of Flatfoot 56 and the screaming metal of Iwrestledabearonce.

GBH tonight (July 27)

Posted By on Tue, Jul 27, 2010 at 8:45 AM

GBH Thirty-two years later, pioneers of the English street punk scene of the late '70s are still belting out their tunes of anarchy and drunken bar fights. The lifestyle of grievous bodily harm may have slowed and lead man Colin Abrahall's hair isn't spiked quite as high as in 1982, but they still pack a powerful punch with their machine-gun paced lyrics and music that charges their live show. With Outernational and Antiseen. $12-$15, Tremont Music Hall, www.tremontmusichall.com
